Installed a new system yesterday and rather than create a partition for /var I
cp -a /var to /usr on a large partition, deleted /var and created a symbolic
link to replace it.
My mail file is now read-only so perhaps I messed up the permissions.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

Change them to potato as that will work during the transition from
frozen to stable.
There have been bug reports filed on both of these problems, so the
maintainers are aware of the situation. Actually menu doesn't break
anything else but many of the menu items don't show up.
