The answer may be as simple as this: COM1 = /dev/ttyS0, not ttyS1.
Another thing to look for is a symbolic link from /dev/mouse to
/dev/ttyS0 (if you refer to the mouse as /dev/mouse in XF86Config).
If that isn't the problem, send the pointer part of /etc/X11/XF86Config
to the list for comment.

recovery mails in my inbox. Does anybody know how to disable this?
I had installed gnome through debian CDs from a local magazine.
Now Gnome is working, but many functions are missing and doesn't look
like a complete gnome at all. Also, If i click on the properties tab
of any gnome item, Gnome segfaults, then restarts. SHould I do
a complete reinstall of Gnome,
I want to do the following things during boot up:
1. insmod -f a modem module
2. setfont /path/to/consolefont/
I Understand that I have to write a script. Okay, written. The script
executes fine. Now where do I put the script, and how do I make
it run during bootup?

I got it working. The problem was, I had used alien to convert afterstep.rpm
to .deb, had installed it, then dpkg -r it. The conffiles were mentioned
in the status list. So I did a dpkg --purge afterstep, and then, viola,
apt-get is working again. whew, after a week of desperate attempts,
I am repartitioning my hard drive using cfdisk. I will
be configuring a dual boot PC with Debian potatoe and
Windows ME. For Windows use is LBA preferred? I
apologize if this is somewhat off topic of debian but
I would not be faced with this dilema if I wasn't
trying to install Debian. Thanks.
For some reason after installing and reinstalling vim, ae still remains
the default editor.
when I look in /etc/alternatives I see:

lrwxrwxrwx1 root root 21 Apr 30 23:12 editor.1.gz -
/usr/man/man1/ae.1.gz

Hello,
This annoys me a bit. Everytime I reboot, Nvi recovers two text files.
These files are almost a year old now. I don't need them anymore. Why does
Nvi keep recovering these files? I even removed Nvi and I still get these
recovery mails in my inbox. Does anybody
