I just installed IBM Java 1.3 JDK on my system running sid. I unpacked the tarball version under /opt (/usr/local would be fine). I then copied /usr/sbin/update-alternatives-jdk1.1 to /usr/local/bin/, renamed it to update-alternatives-jdk-IBM1.3, and edited it to point at the IBM binaries.
