I am running unstable, and tried to install qt2-dev using apt-get. dpkg gives
an error, that the post-install script failed. I tried pointing apt at
unstable, testing, and stable, and got this error with all three versions of
qt2-dev. Any suggestions?

To rip CD's, use the command-line tool cdparanoia. It will do the best job.

It can use winamp skins. It used to be called X11Amp.
xmms has a plugin that can record a track into a .wav file (disk writer
plugin). I think it can write from any source it can read from (eg
cd/mp3/wav/etc...)

Two things:
1) Make sure you have kdelibs3-crypto
it looks like ntp is running but I see no log entries, only when it
starts. it used to log what it does, now it doesn't...
when I do shutdown ntp stop says process not found (so it cannot be
killed)
