Como ya han dicho muchos, lo puedes realizar de dos formas:
1) Con un script de inicio en /etc/init.d que ejecute start-stop-daemon,
éste suele enviar los pid's
a ficheros en /var/run y ahà lo puedes consultar, en /etc/init.d viene
un ejemplo que se llama skeleton
y que te puede orientar

Si comparas VirtualBox con VMWare server, pierde por lejos vmware
server y la unica ventaja sobre VirtualBox es que no necesita X para
arrancar VMs.

Passei cerca de seis meses com o meu desktop em 64bits e sinceramente
a conclusão que eu cheguei é que não há nada que justifique fazer
isso, a menos que você tenha mais do que 4GB de RAM. Mesmo porque a
performance do seu sistema, seja em 32bits ou 64bits, será a mesma.
