I can't seem to get backspace to work with gvim (or vim in an Eterm window).
I've tried putting

OK, I'm trying to use dvorak7min -- I can use it fine in non-gui land, but
when I go into X, nothing seems to work. I issue the command asdf which
should switch it, but it gives me this error message:
$ asdf
Couldn't interpret _XKB_RULES_NAMES property
and I get that message when I try to
Ok -- I'm using potato and gnome and this morning, I did an apt-get update
; apt-get upgrade...and, low and behold, almost all my pixmaps are gone for
gnome (all the main ones, at least)

Ok, I install php3 right (well, at least it works) in apache so far as I
can tell. But I can't get the mysql functions to work,
I installed php3-mysql -- and now I have a line in my php3.ini:
extension=mysql.so
and mysql.so is in (i've checked) my extension_dir.
I don't see any error
Seeing the degree of testing (justifiable, I'm sure!) that new debs go
through before they get to unstable/stable --- I was wondering if there is
any index or any way to find the more experimental packages other than
running across the maintainer's web page by chance --- take, the e-cvs debs
Are there any instructions on how to set up mail for a standard
home-desktop user? I.E.: I send my mail via smtp and recieve via pop3?
I got fetchmail working -- but it seems that all my messages are frozen

Yup -- you're probably not used to this new parport thing that was
introduced in 2.1 and now is in 2.2 --- but it needs to be compiled with
the kernel --
Look it general options or something -- you need to enable parport devices
-- then go to character devices and you'll be able to enable
Easy way to do this...
put xhost localhost in your .xinitrc
or, you could type it each time before you go into root.

Here are my commands, the problem is below:

Ok... I can't remember if this started when I installed 2.2, but I suppose
it doesn't really matter.
the ALT key (on my PC keyboard) doesn't seem to work in emacs.. It works in

I remember using xmodmap
I've got a relatively small harddrive running Debian -- I could fit it all
on a CD-R, and I'd like to, frankly. I LOVE debian and my system now.
What's the recommended way of doing this. I fear that I'll backup crazy
stuff if I just tar the entire root directory --- isn't there some wacky

Ok, I'm using xdm and everything, when I su to root from my normal account
and try to use x programs -- the program yells at me and tells me to use
xhost to add whatever host to the list of approved addresses...
Anyway -- so I get out of the shell and type xhost localhost or something

Hey,
I'm using apt-get (with ftp.us.debian.org unstable main contrib non-free)
and trying to install gnome, but nothing seems to be working.
Assuming I'm staying with a binary distribution, is the only way to get
gnome working by using RPM? Is that safe with debian, or will it screw up
