"gettext" in stable and testing, and was moved into "gettext-base"
in unstable. So it looks like you're installing gettext out of
testing (ver 0.10.40-8), when you've installed gettext-base out of
unstable (or something like that). So you might try purging
both packages
ct between XP and the beautiful Debian.
Configure your bootloader to do just that. My personal preference
is for grub; this should help you to understand grub:

When you make your copy of 2.4.18-bf2.4, give it your own
append-to-version. The package manager will then see it as
a differently named package.

I confirmed this by going into aptitude, looking under upgradeable
packages, going to "perl", and

when it involves upgrades to stuff like perl or python (which also
happened recently). There's a certain extent you can minimize it
manually, as per above; otherwise, you just gotta tough it out. If
