On the uk.comp.os.linux newsgroup recently, a gentleman remarked that he re-initialised his (type -P input DENY style ) firewall every ten minutes from a cron job. When asked why, he said because of ipchains -F; ipchains -X In other words flush rules one by one then delete rules one by one. I

SCSI CDRW hangs kernel

I have a SCSI CDRW (Yamaha CDW4416S) on my Advansys board. It worked fine on Slink but hangs the kernel on boot-up every time with Potato. I left it disconnected but now it irritates. My SCSI cdrom is fine. Why should this be? -- Regards from Chris

nfs mounted cdrom dosen't umount

I use nfs for various drives/directories but if I nfs mount a cdrom, when the client has finished I can't umount it. It says device is busy even when the client computer has been switched off. I have to reboot the server. What am I doing wrong? -- Regards from Chris

Does Debian work with SCSI CDR's? I have a Yamaha 4/4/16 and it hangs the 2.2.x kernel on bootup. Slink was fine. A mate told me there was something in lastmin.html about it but I never found it myself. regards Chris

There has been a lot of traffic about Exim, so I apologise if this is old hat. I use sendmail (with the 'expensive' option) to deliver local mail immediately and queue Internet mail until my cron job connects to my dial up ISP and then does a sendmail -q Can you do the same with Exim? Incidentally

I installed it on an AMDK62/333 with 128Mram in /usr/local. Using Potato Test cycle 1 It installed no problem. Vmware complains about AMD chips and Win95, say don't use the patch supplied by Microsoft. I haven't 'optimised' it yet and runs too slow in window mode, just about acceptable in full sc

Don't know the answer to the problem but, my NIS client couldn't bind to my NIS server (itself) until one day I set up a DNS server (another computer) for my Intranet. Then NIS started working. Both computers are in /etc/hosts and /etc/nsswitch.conf says try hosts first. I'm confused.
