have it run fetchmail before it checked for mail.

luck. NFS works fine for me locally - my home directory is
NFS mounted, etc. Also, the hosts.allow and hosts.deny
files are the default files ( hosts.allow is empty and
hosts.deny has ALL: PARANOID).

to install the bin86 package (I am not sure why kernel-package or
kernel-source don't depend on bin86). Also, you should read
the READMEs that come with kernel-package and kernel-source.

I figured out the problem. You were correct, it was plip that was
causing the problem. I don't know why I even installed PLIP. I
guess I must have thought it was a combination of SLIP and PPP.
