Ok let me correct myself. What you did was to highlevel format the
zip drive to work with a dos or mac file system (like doing a mkfs).
But you CANNOT lowlevel format a zip drive to increase it's capacity
as you can for a floppy. You have no control
Not only that, but I don't think that you can low level format a zip
drive, as you can with a floppy. You MUST buy preformatted zips,
which is why they come in PC and Mac flavors.

Hello. After a recent reboot, lilo didn't load. It went through the
memory
check, and then said: Verifying DMI Pool Data .. and hung. I

from a floppy, re-ran lilo, and it still does the same thing. Just

When I start X with XDM and log in the 'debian banner' stays in the
background of my desktop. I have to drag the xterm window around to
erase it. This did not happen in 1.3.1. (the banner was cleared
before the window manager started). It does not seem to matter which

configured into the kernel. These modules are called out in
/etc/modules. I have rebuilt the kernel using the kernel package
utility. This created a debian kernel-image package which I

usually mount everything (cd, floppies) under mount. But I did make mount
points of /A, /B, /CD, and now /bernie. The latter is for my bernoulli

I have an old version of LyX on my bo system that I know I loaded off the
official 1.3.1 CD. I wanted to get the source package for LyX off the hamm
directory on the ftp site but I can't find it. If fact LyX doesn't seem to

After looking around on the net, I think that is right.
The RTL8029 card is supported by the ne2000 driver in linux. You need to
re-compile your kernel. Invoke make menuconfig and under the network
options select the ne2000 driver. In the pre-2.0.34 kernels this is under
the ISA network card drivers since the ne2000 pci card uses the same
driver.

which I got out of a book on Linux networking. Previously I was using
/dev/ttyS1 for outgoing connections. Is there any reason to use the cua
devices?
A while ago I tried to boot slackware a compaq deskpro here at work and
found that it would not boot using the standard boot disk. The problem, of
course, is that the machine does NOT have a floppy drive, it uses an LS-120
drive. Now I know that this drive is supported under linux as a removable
ANy suggestions on how I can get PPP to recognize my com port? I just
installed linux on my
system. I set pgm to tty1 (com2) (it was orignally on tty0) which is
where my mouse is. It
it working. Neither PPP nor minicom will recognize cua2, Com3.
I was screwing this up in sort of the same way.
ifconfig will show a connection to ppp0 when the connection is
established. You could write a script that runs ifconfig every second or
so using grep to look for 'ppp0' and report when the link is up, then stop
itself.

included... The .deb version does... I had to figure that out about 3

I would really suggest not using .deb kernels. The reason they have FAT32
support is because they are just the standard default bins.

interrupt. That could be your problem. Go into your bios setup and insure
that these comm ports do NOT share interrupts. Usually interrupt 5 or 7
can be used for the third comm port.

I may have the same tape drive as you. I find an IBM (made my archive
corp) DDS2 scsi tape drive at a ham radio flea market for $10. It works
fine thou it is slower than a QIC drive (but holds lots more). I am using
tar. To put more than one backup on a tape use the /dev/nst0 device (no

First, kudos to the Debian and Linux developers. I was given a
PS/2 Model 80 (386 - Microchannel (MCA) machine) with an
MCA IDE controller. I added a 2 GB IDE drive and an ATAPI
CDROM. The debian installation went flawlessly!!! Both the

windows computers access the internet via a local network to the linux box
using IP - Masquerading.

chap-secrets to reflect my ISP. Since I want to use my COM2 port to
