Personally I also noticed some errors after I upgraded my kernel to 2.6; errors that only showed up in boot, and *didn't* show up in dmesg (or any other log file in /var/log/). I still don't undersrtand why they (the error-messages) didn't show up in a log; they should, as far as I understand?

I had that problem when mounting a windows partition. Solved it by adding, in my case, 'iocharset=iso8859-15' to fstabs; i.e. mounting it with that option. Don't know which charset is the proper one for american english though; iso8859-1? Apostrophes, quotes, scandinavian characters (åäö), etc.
