Upgrade 32bit to 64bit

I have an updated etch system running a 32 bit kernel that I want to upgrade to a lenny 64 bit kernel, etc. I have printed out the release notes, but they do not address this upgrade. Should I just upgrade or are there particular steps I need to go through to get my system to run 64 bit
