No Backspace in X

I am having trouble with my backspace key in X. It acts as the delete key rather than the backspace, deleting characters after the cursor rather than backspacing over them. This only occurs in X apps, not in the xterm windows. For example Netscape, XPaint, etc... Anyone know how to fix this
