If your configs in /etc/postgresql/ are setup right, it should not mather...
My PGHOME is /home/postgres and is on a Hardware Raid-5.
Note: linear is bad and you should repartitioning/reorganizing your HDD's
:-)

not sure if it is already in the kernel, but it is out there.
IF you are willing to use this (killer) patch,
you can give ext4 a try too!
