Once upon a time that problem happens to me. The solution was pretty
easy indeed:
1. Boot from a rescue floppy or CD with rescue root=/dev/hd##
2. remount /dev/hd## to admite write
3. edit lilo.conf to meet your needs
4. Write LILO to /dev/hda, do this regardles of where is your linux system
