want Linux to be the ubiquitous OS, and not
just for the cognoscenti, we can't ignore details like this.

Some might say, "But you can put it in an init script". I say, "why?".

It tries, but it really doesn't want to mount. Your hypothesis of an extra
driver that interferes is reasonable.
d the full output of dmesg from the most recent boot. It looks
like it finds and correctly identifies the CD (the model number appears
right), so I'm really at a loss.

A
e of the daily boot floppy sets, but that seems extreme. I would prefer
to stay with Debian, as it is the basis for many of the other distro's and
has a well-developed updating mechanism, but I would also like the use of my
CDROM.

Thank you! I have attached the output of the two lsmod queries. I would
feel a lot better if someone who knew more about Debian than me were to
suggest which modules are needed before I modprobe my system to death.

First time: Debian flaming noob. During this process of elimination, I did
about ten full installs from boot floppies using different setups (all
default, then expert26 with various answers to questions asked). Still,
blazing noob to Debian.

As an additional piece of information, I have changed to the testing
distribution and upgraded the kernel to 2.6.11. No difference. The Knoppix
disk still boots and can read the CD once booted, while Sarge (testing,
2.6.11) cannot read the same physical CD.
Any ideas?
