No CD sound

Running Sarge, my Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop loads the proper sound module, snd-OPL3SA2. But XMMS and GNOME-CD will only occasionally play the sound from an audio-CD, even though they read the titles from the CD tracks. What's the problem? Somebody recommended that I upgrade the kernel to 2.6.

After help from the list, I was able to configure my OPL3SA2 sound card with ALSA. Now, however, I cannot get the CDROM drive to play an audio CD. Gnome-CD and Ascd see the music CD, read the title, and spin the disk. But no sound. The sound modules are loaded, and alsamixer has the levels

Thomas, I personally have found ndiswrapper difficult to get running under Sarge. I would be interested in hearing other people's experiences. I now have ndiswrapper installed, can load the driver with modprobe, but have yet to make my LinkSys card connect to the network. Best, Ted Parks

Using an unstable package with an otherwise stable distribution
