Newbie problem: can't reach an ftp site

I recently loaded Linux onto my PC (Pentium II) and configured PPP correctly. I am able to connect to my ISP successfully, but I cannot reach any ftp site (e.g. ftp.us.debian.org). The error message I receive is 'Unable to locate host'. I know the site exists because I can reach it via ftp
