utmp/wtmp problems

I just upgraded to hamm from 1.3r8, everything seemed to go smoothly, but now I have a bit of a problem with utmp/wtmp. [see below]. I remember seeing something about this in the past, however I cannot find the message. The rest of the system is functioning fine. Any help would be appreciated!

Sounds like you are trying to load the UMSDOS filesystem as a kernel module, but you didn't build and install the modules yet, or UMSDOS wasn't selected as a fileystem type in the config stage. Go through the kernel config ('make menuconfig' is a quick and easy text menu), go down to Filesystems,

I am running debian linux 1.2, when I log in from the console or telnet, I get an error on running fortune: /usr/share/games/fortunes/art.dat: Too many open files I also get this error whenever I try to run Netscape, except relating to the java library files (instead of art.dat):
