but is there any way of extracting information such
as text and pictures out of a PDF file that anyone
knows of? So far I haven't used PDF files to other
things than view them, and occasionally print them,
using xpdf, but now I need to cut

i often use pdftotext, it works great (xpdf package).
pdftopbm should help you with images, but i never tried it.
Or pdfimages, same package.
