My thanks for all the help and suggestions, and my apologies for all the floundering. Cepstral support spotted the problem pretty quickly. Evidently somehow I managed to install a 32 bit Debian on this 64 bit PC, but I was attempting to install a 64 bit package on it. Downloading and installing
