In recent weeks when logging in from start or from a screensaver login
or when hitting the shutdown/reboot .. I notice a brief (maybe 1/2 sec)
flickering of the screen. This doesn't appear or happen with anything
else, I don't think it relates to monitor re-adjustment ... even

I too had problems with the mouse cursor after upgrading to Jessie. It
turned out I had to uninstall/reinstall the drivers for the discrete gpu.
It seems you have an integrated gpu, but maybe it's worth trying
un/installing the drivers.

No warnings or anything at the journal. I am using lightdm, so my
command was 'journalctl -u lightdm.service'.
Do you think to better use gdm instead of lightdm? My understanding

Yes, I tried also different refresh rates (if the pull down menu gave me
choices).

I installed jessie with LXDE, 3.16.0-4-amd64.
The problem I am facing is that when I move the cursor or when there are
other changes on the screen like moving lines the Monitor starts to flicker.
The monitorcomputer isn't new, there was Debian installed a few years
ago and there it

There was an old Debian installed which I removed yesterday and there it
worked without that problem.

PS: I also tried different resolutions. No effect!

But then the entire screen started flickering.

I don't think that it is hardware problem. Similar on (desktop, not laptop):

i810 driver from ubuntu (!), and older from debian works fine. Also
change from intel to vesa solves problem.

Since LCD pixels remains on (or off) all the time (as opposed to CRT
were pixel brightness was fading in a few milliseconds), there's no need

It is setting the display properties... try to see
VT's as this is the script to gets that going. You might want to
review that script, it looks like you could work around some of the
setup issue by putting them in inittab or maybe elsewhere so that you
could get the same effect without flickering.

I believe this is normal behavior. In fact, it should flicker 6 times

I have been using icewm and I have noticed
funny behavior of emacs windows.
If I maximize an emacs window, and try to
move it right or left, (for instance on a two monitor
x window), it RESISTS moving and moves back to where
