This is a little off-topic;however.... I've just been tasked with setting up an Intranet Web Server for our company and I need some help with "sizing" - I haven't been able to find any info on this posted on the web anywhere.
Anyway, I want leverage my existing experience with Apache and Debian Linux, so I'm thinking of putting the two together and coming up with a solution that will cover what we need. I need to setup a server that will handle approximately 100-200 concurrent users accessing fairly typical web site information (mix of text and graphics). Any ideas on what I can expect for typical data throughput per user? 100KB per minute? If so, then I need a system that will support 200 x 100KB ==> 20,000KB/minute ==> ~350KB/s throughput. With these numbers, I don't see network capacity as being a problem. However, I have no idea what type of hardware I'm going to need to support this. i.e. what might I require in the way of CPU, RAM, and Disk I/O? I assume order of importance will be RAM, CPU, and finally Disk I/O, but what quantity/quality of each will I require? One other thing. I'm probably going to need Apache-SSL.... Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. (BTW, I went to various Apache web sites and haven't been able to find any of this information or mailing lists pertaining to the Apache Web Server. Do you know of any?)
