Last weekend, i had the same problem on an Fujitsu-Siemens Notebook.
But i have no external drive connected to the Notebook.
The Notebook worked fine for weeks and this was the first time, this
issue was observed.
One question:
This Notebook has 768MB of RAM and is only used for Off

I don't know why you're having a problem, but I'd suggest the following:
- boot into runlevel 1
