I set up a trial ISP at home with a 30-day trial of Lingo for VOIP, a USR 56K external modem, and the latest install of Debian. I followed the ppp configuration according to http://tvilda.stilius.net/callback_en.php
My goal is to use my home setup as an ISP to permit my PDAs to dial via bluetooth to my cell phone to my home VOIP and then get on the Internet. ISPs only support PAP. I can support whatever I want, since I'm running the show. My cell provider charges a ridiculous amount for data access, and I must always be on their network if data will work. I only plan to do it sparingly, and I have a ton of minutes, so I can use voice minutes for the data calls. When my PDA dials via bluetooth through my cell phone, I can hear the modem trying to negotiate, and retry, then finally fail. My /var/log/syslog shows a ton of the following, whether or not VOIP is talking to the modem: Nov 18 20:23:33 debian mgetty[16189]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:23:33 debian mgetty[16189]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=16189 Nov 18 20:24:18 debian mgetty[16389]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:24:18 debian mgetty[16389]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=16389 Nov 18 20:25:04 debian mgetty[16598]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:25:04 debian mgetty[16598]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=16598 Nov 18 20:25:50 debian mgetty[16801]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:25:50 debian mgetty[16801]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=16801 Nov 18 20:26:36 debian mgetty[17000]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:26:36 debian mgetty[17000]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=17000 Nov 18 20:27:21 debian mgetty[17209]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:27:21 debian mgetty[17209]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=17209 Nov 18 20:28:07 debian mgetty[17409]: init chat failed, exiting...: Interrupted system call Nov 18 20:28:07 debian mgetty[17409]: failed in mg_init_data, dev=ttyS0, pid=17409 I've tried setting the speed via my PDA and setserial to 9600, but no good. I can use kermit and minicom to successfully talk to the modem, so I know there is good communication there. I'd love for this to be a local configuration issue and not a limitation of VOIP to a POTS modem. In case it matters, I'm in the US. I've done a lot of googling, and shall continue.
