Just to complete my part of this thread, I found my ppp problem.
I had compiled both ppp and slip into the 2.2.16 kernel, and evidently they
didn't play
well together. The new kernel (without slip) is working well.

I recently migrated from SuSE 6.4 to Debian potato...and I am having some
problems with my PPP connection.
Under SuSE my connection worked flawlessly and I was able to use SuSE firewall
