Just thought of something, perhaps that means you can't do
cfdisk /dev/hdb /dev/hdc /dev/hdd
on a nice new collection of disks?

I've partitioned 120 gig drives with cfdisk, so it's good to at least that
point.
In this case, it seems to be an empty partition table, and cfdisk -z
should fix that
