Actually, that's what puzzles me I can't seem to locate
where 'fixed' font is located.
I'm pretty sure it's in the 'misc' font dir. I've commented
out *all* of the fonts paths except for the misc one and X
worked.

You're right :). What are your font paths? You may just not have a line
in your X config file
