Perfect!  In xfce desktop, settings, keyboard, application shortcuts,
add, (each command line below and choose key when prompted):

pactl set-sink-mute 0 toggle
pactl set-sink-volume 0 +5%
pactl set-sink-volume 0 -5%

This solves the adjust sound problem when using xfce.  Thanks Dejan!
