with RedHat before, and what I did was when configuring the kernel, in the
character device section (if you are doing make xconfig), enable parallel
port printer.

Perchance did you not change your /etc/printcap to point to /dev/lp0
instead of /dev/lp1?

to get the printer to work. lpr seems to work, but when I do an lpq I
get something like:
waiting for lp to become ready (offline ?)
