Somewhat OT: First X uses DRI; 2nd doesn't

I'm currently sharing a Debian GNU/Linux box with my sister, and she generally starts X on VT7 via xdm, and I start my X on VT8 with startx -- :1 manually. I finally got direct rendering working on her X, but when I start up my side and run glxinfo|more I get the following error: Xlib:
