Thanks for all the suggestions so far. Unfortunately, I haven't had any
luck at making ftp or telnet work at all, either using ip numbers (gives
error 'no route to host'); or computer names (gives eth0 time out). Could
someone explain what should be after 'search', or 'domain' in the
resolv.conf
If you still have the line starting 'lookup ...' in your /etc/resolv.conf try
removing it completely. I checked the man page and there was no mention about
lookup option.
My resolv.conf looks like this:
search ton.tut.fi cs.tut.fi atm.tut.fi cc.tut.fi
nameserver 193.166.80.16

Thanks for the advice. I can't do 'rmmod 3c509', as it says 'device or
module in use', even if I try this straight away on booting. When I try
'pnpdump', I get unknown command error.

You probably have to say 'ifconfig eth0 down' before you try to remove the
3c509 driver module. I have the pnpdump utility in /sbin directory and you can
get it from http://www.cs.tut.fi/~hessu/pnpdump if you trust my binaries :)
