I have the same problem, also with an S3 ViRGE/DX card. I can produce
it by stopping and starting xdm.
Running setfont (or is that seT7onT?) restores the vc console
fonts, but it's probably a bug in the SVGA's server for this chipset.
Perhaps it's fixed in 3.3.3...
