dpkg-split segfault

I have a client who is running Sarge, and we have run into a problem. apt-get is unusable -- it retrieves files just fine, but when it goes to unpack them, we get a seg fault in dpksg-split. Will it be sufficient to make a copy of the dpkg-split binary from another system? Is it possible

Dearest Org, I find that I cannot find dpkg-split. It does not seem to be in the tools directory refered to in the user documents and the faq. I have looked at all the mirrors too, and they have all lived up to the name by also not containing it. What am I missing here? Thanks, Dale

I downloaded Perl.deb package from internet in order to install on my machine at home. The size of this package is more than 2M. In the FAQ of Debian said , there is a program called dpkg-split in ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/tools directory. Run this program in DOS and it will split the file
