My solution was to go to install ghostscipt 7.0 using alien and dpkg. Still didn't work so I installed redhat printtool.. sort of worked, printed a message about no file name at the top of my letter, then printed the letter correctly. Then I went to the cups website downloaded the cups .deb package, removed lprng and apsfilter and installed cups. Typed http://localhost:631 in netscape added a printer on lp
