I'm installing Debian 2.2r potato off the CDs onto my
Toshiba Satellite Pro 405cs laptop. I ran into
trouble while installing the packages with dselect.
While unpacking, I received error messages on a couple
packages (gimp and something else, i think), and it
told me to run dpkg --configure -a.

Hi, right in the middle of my dist-upgrade-ing to xfree 4.0.1 (hurray!), I'm
getting a physical hard drive error.
My terminal says:
Setting up xfonts-100dpi (4.0.1-1) ...
md5sum: read error on stdin
dpkg: error processing xfonts-100dpi (--configure):
subprocess md5sum returned error exit s
Is there anyway to redirect the output? Perhaps pipe it into mail.

I just want the errors reported. This one may not serrious, but I've had
others -- ie, Linux can read/write to certain sectors -- on previous hard
drives. I'd like to know about all errors before I lose the hard drive.

I want to be able to catch hard drive errors and email the administrator
about the errors. Below is a sample message from the console:
hda: irq timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
ide0: reset: success
Of course, all errors aren't reported the same; I want all information
concerning the hard drive dev

Any advice of what does the following error message mean
hda:hda: set_multmode: status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
hda: set_multmode: error=0x04 {DriveStatusError}

I have been experiencing the same problem with my hard drive. I
believe the problem is that is is simply reaching the end of its
life as I have had it running solid for the last year and have
had it for 3 years before that.
If anyone can give me a more optomistic diagnosis, I would be
very happy.
What do the following errors mean:
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma_intr: error=0x40 { UncorrectableError }, LBAsect=1640763,
sector=103023

end_request: I/O error, dev 03:06, sector 1030230
hda: dma_intr: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hda: dma
It sounds to me like a problem with your machine. DOS and Windoz are
NOT as verbose as Linux (or Unix) so it may even be possible that such
errors occur and are not reported. I don't know about any of the
'standard stuff' but most of the third party diagnostic software would
report such problems.

When I try to install Debian GNU/Linux to my machine, every time Debian
tries to write to my hard drive, I get an error. For example, when I am
following the installation program,
