AFAIK kppp does not like to have "lock" set in /etc/ppp/options. Commenting it
out made kppp work for me.

While I don't connect to AOL directly - I go thru my ISP - this is basically
what I do when I need a connection.

Why not write a one line script called dial aol which causes wvdail to connect
to aol for you, put this in /bin directory and put a shortcut to this script on
the desktop? Then clicking on this will cause wvdial to connect to aol for you:)

There is a tcl version of wvdial which seems to handle multiple isp accounts
very well and runs in X.
