I've just been using pppd via pon / poff from root ever since I set
things up with pppconfig, but now that I want to add other users to the
system I need a way of giving users access. I tried just adding users
through the appropriate bit of pppconfig, and I far as I can tell, it's
successfully
to take effect.

Pppd sometimes produces this misleading message when the actual problem has
to do with permissions. It's a know bug

J'avais évoqué sur la liste ce pb, jusqu'a ce jour je pouvais me connecter avec
ppd,
ping fonctionnait mais aucun autre soft.
La solution : wwwoffled etait lancé au démarrage mais pas configuré. Il
bloquait la connexion des autres softs.

Your pppd logs indicate what? Try verbose mode or non-daemon ('-d'
option IIRC) to diagnose.

alarm means that chat is timing out. The default timeout can be changed
with chat's '-t' option: man chat.
You could also just call pppd with the 'persist' option (pppconfig can set
this up). 'Persist' wonn't bring the connection back

little while then it stops - with a helpful alarm entered in the logs.

I upgraded to Testing a couple of months ago and it was running
fine on my LAN at home and with dial-on-demand while away.
I was at home for 3 weeks and there were some quite large
upgrades.
Now I'm away I cannot connect. The modem connects ok but then

Since upgrading to the latest version of ppp in woody, I find I keep
getting multiple copies of pppd running whenever I logon. I thought it
might have had something to do with dnrd but eliminating this hasn't
altered it.
Anyone noticed this?

I think pppd is dieing because it is written somewhere in an etc script.
It's something like 'if you dont connect before x-die'
look for this options in the scripts of /etc/ppp
Anyway, from my point of view, the best is making a hand made script for
your ISP
