what was i thinking? when i saw that /usr/share/doc/samba* included
samba/ and samba-common/ i figured that i'd yanked everything
pertinent to samba.

One good way, if you know kind of what you are looking for is dpkg -l
For example:
($ ~)- dpkg -l *samba*
