You probably want snmpd as the package to install for the machine to
query from. Snmp as the package to install to make these queries.
I suggest you get very familiar with the snmpd.conf. It is quite useful
and extensible. You can pretty much interface any local script with it
to make it query

I think the 2.0.x kernel was the last one to keep stats on aliases,
anything newer is interfaces only.
if you need the aliases stats, setup IP accounting and get that
data to M

setup

Does linux keep stats for the interface and aliases and just the combined
total on the interface?

few little questions about snmp monitoring on debian sarge:
-how can i monitor process?
i tried to do this in snmpd.conf for apache (proc apache 10 1),
but i still got the error flag (no active process), however apache is

In /etc/squid.conf I have:

RTFFAQ? Turns out that the problem doesn't occur if I specify a really
long timeout for smtpwalk. After the
'system.sysORTable.sysOREntry.sysORUpTime.9' line, it just gives me an
'End of MIB' and does not stay busy after that. So I know a
workaround, but I'd still like to know why it takes so long

I am using an up-to-date snmp/snmpd on Woody (i.e. both are version
4.2.3-2). If I do an 'snmpwalk localhost public system', it diplays
everything up to system.sysORTable.sysOREntry.sysORUpTime.9 and then
gives me a timeout. After that, snmpd stays unresponsive for a long
time.
