Boyd Stephen Smith Jr.: Buy another 500GB disk and do software RAID 5 if you really need 1TB of space. It won't be great, but it'll be a LOT safer than what you are proposing. mdadm can even do RAID10 on three drives (IBM calls it RAID 1E). You'll get 750GB of space with three 500GB
