You can't just replace compress with gzip for X because there are two
places in the X tree where uncompression is done in-line (server code
and font code.) I'm almost finished with some patches to use zlib
directly instead, which will eliminate the last place debian has any
need for the compress

To generate its fonts, it uses the following command (approximately ;) ):
bdftopcf machin.bdf | compress machin.pcf.Z
But I don't have compress on my Linux box.
I tried moving to gzip without success
