Re: ethernet card
What I wonder is, is there any reason to buy a PCI card (speedwise) if I go for the NE2000 compatible one? As for PCI versions - they're worth it, they speed up transfers accross the network dramatically (that is, if you have both cards being PCI). From: Rick Macdonald [EMAIL PROTECTED] It seems to me that the ETHERNET-HOWTO goes out of it's way to prove that 16bit ISA ethernet cards can handle 10Mb ethernet just fine, and that PCI doesn't buy you anything. An NE2000 is a programmed-IO card, isn't it? While you are transferring data to and from one, your system isn't processing. You might consider a 100MBPS/10MBPS card that is a PCI bus-master. Re: Callback Internet Link
Luis, Here's an idea: Create a script that waits 5 or 10 seconds, then runs /etc/init.d/ppp start, or whatever you use. Then add a new user and specify that script for its shell. Make sure the script is setuid root. You might want to make the script logout, too, after it runs pppd. Hopefully, since the script waits 5 seconds, you won't have any COM port locking problems. Both packages you mentioned have the package name lyx. Dpkg ignores the program version (pre-10.3), but instead looks at the package revision (1). There are lots of reasons for choosing PCI over ISA... In my experience, the throughput of a good 16-bit ISA card is approximately equivalent to that of a PCI card. However, the CPU overhead of network transfers using a good ISA card is much higher than that of good PCI cards. Your next machine will probably have a PCI bus, but it might not have an ISA bus. The total throughput of a good ISA bus is approximately 5 MB/s, if memory serves, as compared to approximately 50 MB/s for even a mediocre PCI. If you sink 1 MB/s into network transfer (yeah yeah, it's only about 700 or 900 KB/s, but let me make a point ok?), you would consume 20% of your ISA bandwidth, and only have 4 MB/s left over for things like disk and video access. On the other hand, on a PCI bus you can sink 1 MB/s to the net and still have LOTS of room for disk, video, etc. About the only advantage of ISA over PCI that i can see is it's slightly cheaper and more old machines support it. As a side note, i have had very good luck with 3com products. I heartily recommend them to anyone shopping for network stuff. Hello all, I am a little bit worried about this message about not finding the map file upon bootup. Everything seems *completely* normal except for this little message. The install script tells you to look for /usr/doc/diald/debian.diald file but does not exist.. :( (and the little documentation that was there did not help any...) I went to the diald homepage... and was not too impressed with the documentation there... I've edited the file chatscript which was in /etc, and /etc/ppp (edited both, just in case) to match my site.. But it doesn't seem to be a config file problem... more of a startup script problem... I don't know why I keep trying to use modules, they never work right for me I trashed my 1.2.13 system on my home box and installed 2.0.2?. Dselect didn't work, so I did a manual job with dpkg. Did the make modules and make module_install and everything seemed to have gone on OK, but when I boot I get the error message no dependancy information for XXX module. And, of course the modules don't install. I have to do a manual install to make things work. What is wrong? While I'm asking for help, setserial doesn't seem to work the way it used to and I can't figure out what to do. It used to be when I typed setserial it found all my serial ports and configured them fine. Now it can't seem to figure out that /dev/cua2 is connected to IRQ 2, not 4. Who dumbed down setserial? I tried the autoconfigure option, but it said that wasn't a valid option, Huh? I also tried another option, autosomethingelse, I don't remember what it was, but setserial didn't seem to do anything or if it did, it was silent. Anyway, I guess I can tell setserial to use IRQ 2, but since it used to figure it out, I sort of think it should still be able to do so. About dselect Ah never mind. I've been trying to use it for years and never have been able to figure it out. Oh, I've installed from an iConnect CD mastered on 3 October. However, I could not solve the problem so I'm looking for a broader audience; I will also check the relevant x-news group. I had X up and running on Debian Linux 1.1.4. My configuration is now as follows: - ASUS P/I-P55TVP4, 133MHz Pentium, 32MByte EDO RAM, internal and external cache disabled. - the rest of the system is unchanged (disk controller, graphic card, X-server, XF86Config and kernel) When starting the server (bash X 2 /tmp/X.log) the disk gets active and the display gets dark. Then all activities are stoped; mouse and keyboard events are ignored except one. When I press ALT+F2 the server turns the display on and shows the mouse-cross for less than one second. After that the system seems to be dead again. Once I upgrade libc to 5.4.7-1, netscape cannot run and it said bus error. Then I downgrade to 5.2.18, netscape runs again. Is it a bug? -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

There is a hint in your posting that you are using an ide adapti CD. If this is the case (and not scsi) you will need the support built into the kernel, so you will probably need to use one of the special kernels (look at the I though IDE-cdrom were in the standard kernel, but the bootdisk should give you more information on cdrom-support. also need iso9660 support (but I think it is standard). Then try: mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdAN /cdrom Where A = a,b,c, or d and N = 0, 1, 2 etc Almost correct: CD's (unlike harddisks, but like floppies) have no partitions. The device /dev/cdrom does not exist normally: it is just a symlink most of us use so we can forget about the normal devicename. The devicename the installation-program wants from you is: /dev/hda - if your CD-ROM is the master device on the first controller (highly unlikely) /dev/hdb - if your CD-ROM is the slave device on the first controller (quite likely) /dev/hdc - if your CD-ROM is the master device on the second controller (also likely) /dev/hdd - if your CD-ROM is the slave device on the second controller (also possible) If you look at the startup-screen when booting linux it probably said where it detected the CD-ROM drive. (to view the startup-messages later you can switch to the second console with Alt-F2 and give the command `dmesg'). What does Debian mean?
Hi, I know this is not terribly important but I was wondering where the name debian came from. Maybe those that have been in the project long could share that with those of us that joined when debian had been underway for a long time already. Ghostscript Dependency Problem
Hi. When I try to install the Debian ghostscript package, dselect notes that it depends on another package which is not available. What do I need to do to either get this other package (I don't recall it's name at the moment) or get an older version of gs which does not have this dependency? Digest version?
I have been off this list for a while because of the volume of messages. I was told that a digest version of the list was being set up. Has this happened? If so, how do I register for the digest? Re: ethernet card
Martin Stromberg wrote: Hello to all! I'm intending to put in two ethernet cards in two computers, so that I can nfs mount /home and /usr in one (where disk space is limited) from the other (where there's plenty of disk space). I don't have a great deal to choose from from my hardware supplier: Either an NE2000 compatible, Genius GE2000; or a 3Com card. I can get either one with ISA or PCI bus. What I wonder is, is there any reason to buy a PCI card (speedwise) if I go for the NE2000 compatible one? Do any of you know if there are problems with the Genuis card? Or do you think that the double price of the 3Com cards is justified, and what kind of 3Com card should I have if I decide for one of those? My supplier don't know what kind of 3Com cards he have! He says he buys them from another store. I hope I didn't upset anyone with my non-debian specific questions, MartinS I use Intel Ether Express Pro 100 PCI cards that I ordered directly from Intel for $49 (great price -- it was 2 mnth ago). I had to get a special Driver for it from Donald Becker's site. and rebuilt it as a module (instructions came with it). It works great -- besides the card being PCI, I also like the fact that the drivers automatically detects what IRQ and address it is on -- no hardware config needed. My kernel is 2.0.22 (it worked with 2.0.20 and couple of versions below that). Vladislav -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . From: Christian Watts [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have an Artisoft Noderunner S/I (NE2000 clone, the one that comes with lantastic), and I've been able to continue to run apps while transferring data, and even play video games across the network without noticeable timing problems. This may be true of some cheap clones, but I doubt if it's a special feature of my card that I can do this. I looked at the driver code and verified that it is doing programmed I/O. So, while it is perhaps not significant for some systems, the thing is using the CPU to wait for ISA bus transfers, and the CPU is stuck at interrupt priority and not running your program while this is happening. No doubt it goes by too fast to notice. You'd probably have to run a benchmark to tell the difference. And, of course the modules don't install. I have to do a manual install to make things work. What is wrong? You probably just need to run depmod -a to register the dependency information.
