Compiled Kernel 2.0.35 with ppa support as a module. When I try to mount
the zip drive it returns the message mount: the kernel does not recognize
/dev/sda4 as a block device
Tried changing port settings in BIOS and running MAKEDEV neither helped.

the reading I've done, requires recompilation of the kernel.
Using config (the how-to or readme suggested that xconfig is not the best
to use ?) I have configured everything that I want except SOUND!!!

You will have to download and use the isapnptools package. Once you have
that installed just follow along with the instructions and you should have
sound. By the way, sound *must* be compiled as a module in order for the
isapnptools to work properly.

What modules do you include on install? Does
Partition Magic is an _excellent_ program for resizing partitions. I have
entrusted my disk to it on numerous occasions (and so have some of my
friends) and it has never had a problem. Too bad it's a DOS/Windows
program and won't resize ext2 partitions. :(

This is a pretty much stock setup -- the only thing un-debian I've done so
far is change /bin/sh to point to pdksh, but that *shouldn't* be the problem
