Distribucion de Potato (y otra cosilla mas)
Dos preguntas para la gente de la lista. La primera es como carajo se hace para bajar los cds oficiales de Debian potato a traves de Internet. Y es que tengo entendido que estan en fase de pruebas terminales. Decir que mis discos de slink se han jodido :( y utilizo solo el Windows 98. No me vale el que me lo pueda comprar en las tiendas, ya que no me fio un pelo de los distribuidores (creo que aqui en España no los hay, por lo menos distribuidores oficiales, ¿y si me venden una potato mas antigua???) y ademas deberia echar cuentas de que me trae mas cuenta si comprarlo o bajarmelo, la potato claro. Contando el tiempo que le eche claro. Tengo la SuSe 6.4, por si me valiera pa algo La segunda pregunta en realidad es una exposicion que quiero hacer a los usurarios de esta lista. No comprendo porque a veces se pierde el tiempo con tantos res sobre un tema (si se quiere, que dos personas se pongan en contacto ellos solos para hablar de lo que sea) , aparte de que algunos envios son un poco de cachondeo en realidad. Y es que me voy por ahi un dia y medio y cuando vuelvo tengo 81 mensajes, la mayoria como los descritos anteriormente. La lista se satura, no encuentras la informacion que buscas (por lo menos yo) con soltura. De todas maneras respeto que cada cual escriba lo que le de la gana. Sobre el formato wav, no lo he intentado en ese sentido, sí al revés. (Capturé los tracks como ´.cdr´ y necesitaba pasarlos a wav para codificarlos como ´.mp3´). Para eso usé el sox que convierte entre distintos formatos de audio: sox .cdr .wav Ojo que el .wav puede no estar en la frecuencia que se necesita para el CD. Supongo que el sox puede encargarse de hacer la conversión. Tal vez sea por eso que el cdrecord no puede grabarlo pese a lo que dice su man page. -- Saludos, O__ Enzo. Samba y windows
Ante todo un saludo. Seguro que esta pregunta causará extrañeza o incluso el cabreo de alguno. Si es así pido perdón de antemano. Resulta que tengo configurado el samba. Lo que quiero hacer es que en cada puesto de windows entren más de un usuario, de manera que introduciendo su clave de acceso pueda acceder a su carpeta en el servidor. Hasta aquí bien y se puede hacer, pues si se quiere entrar en la carpeta de otro pide la clave de acceso y no te deja si no te la sabes. Pero hay un problema: como windows tiene la insana costumbre de poner en su cuadro de dialogo el guardar la clave por defecto si un usuario entra en su carpeta con la sesión de otro y se olvida de quitar la x del cuadro de dialogo (cosa muy frecuente) ocurre que el otro usuario entra libremente en la carpeta del ultimo que ha accedido sin limitaciones. Aparte que es verdaderamente difícil desfacer el entuerto. Entonces mi pregunta es ¿cómo quito esa opción por defecto del dichoso windows? ¿os ha tocado alguna vez? Ya se esto es una lista de debian, por eso pido disculpas, pero el samba es de linux :-) Agradecido Juanma

De este modo los puedes depurar correctamente con cualquier debugger y corregir el fallo (te dará el SEGFAULT just en la linea que falle y no cuando le llegue la señal del kernel). salu2!!! i si me sale el segfault en un prog que no he programado yo (habra un 99% de posibilidades de que sea un conflicto de librerias) como puedo saber que lib es la culpable, asi la actualizo y asunto resuelto (podria haber una utilidad que haga esto!!! si es posible) Turtle inc. over the world.

Ademas el proceso que acceda no puede ir hacia atras en el fichero, solo puede ir hacia adelante.

Sé que /etc/environment recoge configuraciones que se hacen válidas tanto para consola como para las X (por ejemplo, la variable de entorno LANG la tengo sólo en ese fichero), pero no sé si se puede incluir la orden xmodmap dentro de dicho fichero, ni si es lo correcto. Por otra parte, te puedes crear un $HOME/.Xsession que creo se te ejecutaría directamente, o configurarlo en el KDE (que me parece que tiene una especie de menú de inicio como windows...). En fin, son varias posibilidades que he leído u oído mil veces pero nunca me he puesto a utilizarlas. Un saludo, Javi

Si tu configuración actual no te permite escribir mensajes con la dirección antigua puedes poner un Reply-To, entonces el servidor de la lista, creo, interpreta como que el que quiere darse de baja es la dirección que aparezca en el Reply-To.

HylaFax y Sendmail
Hola a todos... He conseguido hacer funcionar el sendmail para enviar faxes, los ficheros de configuracion deben tener un error, al menos los de potato, porque cuando se recompone el sendmail.cf, el mailer de fax queda /usr/local/bin/faxmail, que es incorrecto, deberia ser /usr/bin/faxmail. Eso era lo que provocaba el mensaje de servicio no disponible. Saludos.

Opcion --force del apt
Hola lista. Tengo un problema. Hace bastante que actualicé mi Slink a Potato. El caso es que fue cuando había un error de dependencias ciclicas en no recuerdo que paquetes, y para arreglarlo tuve que activar la opción Force-LoopBreak dentro del archivo apt.conf. Aunque en el man avisan de eso no debería hacerse, me arriesgué, porque era un ordenador de prueba. El caso es que funcionó, pero desde entonces, cuando hago un apt-get upgrade y encuentra algún error o aviso, me dice que lo ignora por estar activada una opción --force. ¿Alguien sabe cómo arreglarlo? Huelga decir que ya borré la línea del Force-LoopBreak del apt.conf, y por más que miro no sé de dónde sale ese --force. Muchas gracias y un saludo ** Emilio Tejedor Escobar **

Hola de nuevo. He estado tratando de compilar JOVE (una version pequennita de emacs, muy cuca ella) en Slink, pero sin resultado. Tras configurar (hay que hacerlo a mano) empiezo a compilar y me dice que redefinicion de noseque' en base.h. He probado con montones de opciones (todas las que vienen en el Makefile) pero sin resultado. Lo curioso es que en Mandrake 6 (el que tengo en el curro) funciono sin mucho trabajo. ?Puede ser un problema de las librerias de Slink? ?Alguien ha compilado Jove a mano? ?Existe un .deb? Si no existe la verdad es que igual me pongo a hacerlo cuando tenga tiempo (si te gusta emacs pero no tener 20 megas para el bicho esta bastante bien, la verdad, aunque no se si tiene soporte para algo mas que C). Hola: Acabo de instalar debian 2.1 en una máquina sparc. Sin embargo no encuentro el xf86config ni nada que se le parezca. ¿Puede alguien indicarme como instalar el servidor X en una máquina de este tipo? Novato pregunta sobre impresion
Hola a todos, Hace poco envie un mensaje solicitando ayuda para configurar al impresora. Me enviaron la ayuda (magicfilter, doc-lyx). Despues de 3 dias de darle y darle. Les pido el favor me ayuden. La impresora lo unico que hace es sacar paginas sin imprimir (como cuando se inicia la impresora). La impresora imprime en RH 6.0 (me toco reinstalarlo para probar si funcionaba todavia la impresora) con el driver de hpdj400/500. tengo impresora hp dj310 (compatible dj400) Debian 2.1 Slink (i386) (tengo ademas en otra particion citius Debian 2.1) acepto todas las sugerencias (je, je, ustedes saben que no todas) Gracias a todos. Comprobar checksum de los paquetes
Hola, Es posible en debian (mediante alguna utilidad) comprobar que el checksum de los ficheros instalados coincide con el de los paquetes que se utilizaron para instalarlos. Lo que pretendo es detectas modificaciones en los ficheros desde su instalación. Debian Potato aún no existe como official, debe faltarle como un mes y es que en Debian son muy cuidadoso :), pero busca los unestable, que son más estables a estas alturas que la mayoria de las demás distribuciones. . On-topic: Charla de instalación de Debian
Hola ! Eh asistido a una charla de instalación de Potato que pretendía demostrar lo fácil que es de instalar ... y menudo desastre. El que daba la charla, Manty por si alguien lo conoce, hizo una instalación de usuarios avanzados, lo que personalmente me vino muy bién, pero desanimó a la nutrida concurrencia ( esta es la buena noticia ). No se le ocurrió otra cosa que hacer una partición para tmp, otra para home, otra para var y así. La gente al ver tantas particiones juntas flipó, pero la instalación de Potato se quedó conmigo cuando empezó a preguntarle donde queria instalar las particiones en un menú a todo color, es decir al detectar varias particiones ya supuso para que eran !, y luego no había más que asignarlas /dev/tal a /home /dev/eso a /var ... y ya está. En el siguiente paso inauguró un sistema que creo agradará a los que discutían conmigo de filosofia de linux ( pero que poco elitistas somos ), te dejaba elegir entre instalación simple y avanzada. La avanzada es la de siempre, pudiendo usar apt, dselect o dpkg 8-), la simple distribuye los paquetes según su uso, así aparecen pocos paquetes con nombres como samba, desrrollo en C, funtes del kernel, juegos, tex, gnome, X, etc, y tu solo tienes que ir marcando los paquetes que tienes que instalar, y luego el los instala, para finalmente pedirte que los configures. Bien, hasta aquí fácil, pero luego empezó a hablar de compilar alsa, configurar las X, y un sinfín de cosas más que definitivamente desalentó a la peña, y creo que salieron con la idea de que Debina es dificil de instalar ... Pero aprendí una cosa en concreto: ¿ No os ocurre que al arrancar Debian teneis que pulsar primero el botón del medio del ratón para que este empieze a funcionar correctamente ?, pues es fácil de solucionar !, hay que modificar el /etc/gpm.conf y en la linea que pone: append=tremendo lio poner append=-3 para que sepa que el ratón es de tres botones y ya está !, no me digais que lo sabíais, con la ilusión que me hizo enterarme. Otra cosa que aprendí es un poco más de apt, el gran desconocido, como ya dije una vez. No se si fue en esta lista o en otro sitio donde discutimos de que sería deseable que cuando desintales un paquete te desinstale los que dependan de él y solo de él, ¡ Pues lo hace !, ¡ A buenas horas me voy a entera !, es con apt-get remove nombre-de-paquete y apt-get remove nombre-de-paquete --purge para purgar los archivos de configuración. Bueno que para una carta ya he dicho bastante, pero no os creasi, que de filosofía seguiré hablando, porque las ideas mueven el mundo !. . Saludos ! Yo he instalado debian en una Sparc y se que me hice la misma pregunta que tú, creo que tuve algún problema con las X, pero al final se solucionó, pero ahora no me acuerdo como. Me dió la impresión, en aquel momento, que el fichero de XF86Config en Sparc no se toca, existen tres servidores X para Sun, creo recordar Sun4, Sun 24 y Sunmonocromo o algo así. El problema es que se me ha estropeado el diso duro de la Sun y no te puedo dar más detalles, pero la semana que viene lo voy a instalar en otra Sun, si sigues con problemas me mandas un mail y te digo la configuración en la nueva Sun. Aunque a mí me guste mucho pasar horas delante del ordenador, haciendo cosas con las que aprendo un montón y que no sirven de nada, el uso más normal del mismo va a ser el de cualquier electrodoméstico; el ordenador no es un fin en sí mismo, sinó un medio para conseguir un fin (escribir una carta, acceder al correo electrónico, navegar... y, por qué no, usos profesionales, como mantener un archivo de imágenes diagnósticas); la gente que lo usa no quiere saber nada de cómo funciona, quiere saber usarlo y punto. Partiendo de esa premisa, los mínimos conocimientos que deberían exígirsele a ese usuario són aquéllos que consigan dos fines: 1) Le permitan hacer lo que quiere hacer. 2) No perjudique a nadie (incluído a sí mismo) cuando lo haga. Para mí, como usuario de la red, es mucho más importante que alguien que se conecta de nuevo sepa que no me va a hacer ninguna gracia si me manda un attach con una animación chorra que ocupa 3 Mb. (o si lo manda a la lista), que no que sepa que existen distintas formas de codificación de ese attach, que el fichero viaja en un formato especial que representa los carácteres control y de 8 bits que contiene en texto... etc. etc. Y creo que a ese nuevo usuario, le ahorrará muchos más disgustos saber lo primero que lo segundo. Saber algo de virus y seguridad... pues lógico, saber que en un attach puede venir cualquier cosa, que si no haces doble click no se ejecutará nada y no hay riesgo, saber que no es buena idea poner como password el nombre de la novia... evidentemente, no se trata de que se lea bugtraq, pero sí que sea consciente de los riesgos de usar el e-mail de su empresa para recibir correo personal (¿qué pinta un e-mail titulado I Love You en un ordenador de la NASA, del Parlamento Británico, o de una empresa de piezas de automóvil?). Ese para mí es el mínimo, un usuario no tiene que saber cómo funciona el ordenador, si me apuras, ni siquiera tiene porqué saber qué sistema operativo está usando, S asi va todo, un usuario de verdad debería como poco como usar el motor S de su máquina, que no es otro que el SO ¿Por qué? ¿Quien no usa ascensores a diario y no tiene ni idea de qué es la corriente trifásica? ¿Cuantos de los conductores sabrían la diferencia entre un motor de dos y de cuatro tiempos? ¿Cuantos podrían explicar por qué una bombilla emite luz y qué diferencia hay con un tubo fluorescente? ¿quien sabe cómo se ajusta el ramal de una antena colectiva para que todos los pisos reciban la misma señal? ¿quien sabe que no se deben poner tramos de tuberías de cobre en una instalación de tuberías de plomo? ¿sabías que la mayor parte de los propietarios de vídeos domésticos no sabe programarlos? ¿Por qué tiene que ser diferente el ordenador? ¿por qué para escribir una carta tengo que saber la diferencia entre multitarea preemptiva y cooperativa? ni lo que es un sistema operativo; el problema es que ese usuario necesitará que alguien le ayude cuando se rompa algo, exactamente igual que yo con el fontanero, el electricista, el mecánico, el cristalero... etc. etc. S eso es lo real hoy en día y asi va todo ¿Cómo va? ¿Cuando tienes una fuga de agua la arreglas tu mismo? ¿Puedes cambiar tu solito el filtro de combustible de tu coche? ¿Sabrías cortar y colocar un cristal en una ventana rota? Distribucion de Potato (y otra cosilla mas)
Dos preguntas para la gente de la lista. La primera es como narices se hace para bajar los cds oficiales de Debian potato a traves de Internet. Y es que tengo entendido que estan en fase de pruebas terminales. Decir que mis discos de slink se han jodido :( y utilizo solo el Windows 98. No me vale el que me lo pueda comprar en las tiendas, ya que no me fio un pelo de los distribuidores (creo que aqui en España no los hay, por lo menos distribuidores oficiales, ¿y si me venden una potato mas antigua???) y ademas deberia echar cuentas de que me trae mas cuenta si comprarlo o bajarmelo, la potato claro. Contando el tiempo que le eche claro. Tengo la SuSe 6.4, por si me valiera pa algo La segunda pregunta en realidad es una exposicion que quiero hacer a los usurarios de esta lista. No comprendo porque a veces se pierde el tiempo con tantos res sobre un tema (si se quiere, que dos personas se pongan en contacto ellos solos para hablar de lo que sea) , aparte de que algunos envios son un poco de cachondeo en realidad. Y es que me voy por ahi un dia y medio y cuando vuelvo tengo 81 mensajes, la mayoria como los descritos anteriormente. La lista se satura, no encuentras la informacion que buscas (por lo menos yo) con soltura. De todas maneras respeto que cada cual escriba lo que le de la gana. That is where the files are kept (even for your own kernel-package builds). Hello Maury, Read the printing HOWTO at http://metalab.unc.edu/mdw/HOWTO/Printing-HOWTO.html short summary of the steps you would have to take: - install spooling software (lpr or lprng or similar) - if you don't just want to be able to print plain text: install gs - install filter software (magicfilter, apsfilter) - perhaps install some further graphics conversion software (package magicfilter recommends a reasonable set of packages, which include support for printing jpeg, tiff and some other) - setup your /etc/printcap file (magicfilterconfig can do that for you for local printers) - if your printer is attached to the parallel port, make sure the lp-module is available to your kernel. In the long run, you'd be a clueless person. It happened to me; long ago I was a Mac user, and I thought that I needed something more interesting than just a nice GUI. Ah, then you know the Mac thing. I think it's important to have both; Critical, in fact. Otherwise, the bigotry that our illustrative olvwm users had would never have allowed something like GNOME... Neither 'install-mbr' nor rerunning 'liloconfig' seems to have had an effect. i don't know, what liloconfig is for, but does it automatically run lilo? the invocation of /sbin/lilo does the actual installation of the boot sector/mbr ... -- Hi! I am writing a server that accepts telnet connections. I am using basic sockets to do so and do not use inetd. I cannot figure out how to disable the echoing to screen for the password. I have tried everywhere else, this is my last resort. Brett

Goodmorning, I have to ask if someone know if there is a good documentation of Gnu C and C++ libraries documentation in postscript, acrobat pdf or something like format. installing kernel
Hi, I've been using debian slink and the 2.0.36 kernel for a while now, and have just compiled the 2.2.4 kernel. I have my linux partition (ext2fs) on hda2. When booting the new kernel, it tells me something like installed root fiesystem (ext. 2) kernel panic: can't find init. try passing init= as kernel option. Init is sitting in /sbin/init, where it should. Anyway, even passing init= as kernel command line via lilo to the kernel doesn't make any difference. What have I done wrong?

undefined symbol
Hi, I'm using debian slink and get an error message when trying to use kpaint, kdvi, ksysv, kgv, khelp and simular programs (otherwise kde works fine, by the way): kdvi: error loading shared librarys /usr/X11R6/lib/libkfile.so.2: undefined symbol: __pure_virtual Slink had been installed without any errors, and running ldd over libkfile.so.2 just says everything's in place and ok. What's going on here, and how can I fix it? I've been getting an undefined symbol message in other situations as well. What does it mean in general? regards, jacob. [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I just installed the frozen potato, and the cold spud tried to make me use xf86config to generate my XF86Config file. I outsmarted the icy tuber by hitting ctl-C and then saying no every time it asked me again, and then I used the bronze tool known as XF86Setup to get a suboptimal but perfectly functional XF86Config file in place. On the way, I had to get rid of the electric yo-yo known as gpm, because it was hijacking my mouse. If I were in charge, I'd drop gpm's priority to optional before releasing 2.2, but then I always purge the dratted package anyway. If I run out of ways to kill time at work, I'll do what other debian users do when they want a thorough X config-- I'll go out on the net and beg users of other distros and similar hardware for relevant snippets of their XF86Config files.

Anyway, even passing init= as kernel command line via lilo to the kernel doesn't make any difference. i have two ideas: 1) all older kernel have a bug in the ext2-fs-driver, which could make your partition unreadable for new kernels, but to be honest, i don't know, which effects the bug has. 2) are you sure, that you mounted the right partition? did you try the root= option? note, that everything, that comes before init= on the kernel command line is dropped (at least by some kernels). btw: kernel 2.2.4 is not out yet - and won't be for the next three months, from what i've heard. -- Hi! Yep, everything I've read or heard suggests if your going to use 2.2, use 2.2.14+ kernels. I'm now running 2.2.15 (pre19-1) with no probs whatsoever. 2.2 is stable enough right now to install. It is in DEEEP FREEEZE at the moment, in final testing before cd images are released. You CAN find some cdr's of potato for sale, or just install over the net. A basic install over a 56k modem will take overnight. I am running 2.2 now, and except for a broken apropos (which no one else knows anything about) it all works fine. Hello, I have been anxiously waiting for Debian 2.2 to be released. Awhile back I installed 2.1 and was very impressed with the package system and overall stability. However, I had problems upgrading to kernel 2.2. Since I needed kernel 2.2 and needed a fully functional system I returned to using Mandrake Linux. Currently, I have some time to fiddle with my system until I start working again. My question is: Should I install the 2.2 pre-release? If so, what suggests do you have? Also, will upgrading to the official release be reasonably straight foward? using the source packages
As I've mentioned here before, I have used Linux since late 1994, but I'm new to Debian. In the past, whenever I've wanted to compile stuff I have just gone out and d/l'd a tar ball and stuck it in /usr/local, did my little incantations and probably include a 'make install' or whatever and that was that. Now I've grown to see the charms of the *deb packages but I wanna compile wine myself on my box here. So, I have the source package, but what do I do now? (If this is too stupid a question to answer, just point me to some doc which will lay it out for me.) For that matter, while we're about it, I'd also like recompile my kernel in the canonical Debian way. Pointers there would also be appreciated. Tia, Maury

First you need to find out if that card is supported. If it is then find out which driver you need. Then you compile that driver into you kernel or as a module. Someone may know which card your talking about and tell you which driver you need, if it is supported. I am writing a server that accepts telnet connections. I am using basic sockets to do so and do not use inetd. I cannot figure out how to disable the echoing to screen for the password. I have tried everywhere else, this is my last resort. Brett I'm not quite sure what you are doing from your description, but I think you need to look at tcgetattr and tcsetattr. See man termios. Unset ECHO, get the password, set back to how it was before. There may be a little more to it than that. Framebuffer settings for the Matrox MGA Milenium
Since I couldn't use the framebuffer with my ATI Rage IIc I switched to an old Matrox MGA Milenium card. It does work perfectly but I don't know the lilo.conf values (vga=...; append=...) to get a 880x660-72 display or similar. O. Wyss
pop3 server w/ virtual domains
Hi, When using exim + virtual domains, is it possible to have a pop3 server also with virtual domains? I mean, if I have some users with same name under different domains, how to serve pop3 for them? Is it possible? I simply backed up my config files, then purged apache-common, apache, and apache-ssl, the did an apt-get install apache-ssl. Worked fine. Then again, having DSL also helps make re-getting packages less of an issue. Theres probably a much more elegant/proper way of doing this, but I was kinda in a hurry. invisible cursor in X windows

Mouse WORKS: I can do everything one can do with mouse (e.g., click, select, move windows and folders) BUT the cursor is invisible. On text mode the cursor is visible. You can of course always choose one of the least demanding modes for the hardware (640x480, 16 colours (in fact this is what XF86Setup does. Uses this mode with the VGA16 server to throw you directly into X for a graphical configuration and later on switches to the better settings you supplied)). But if you want to get the best out of your hardware, you should know the capabilities of your monitor/graphics card. Most modern monitors have protection circuits against a dotclock which is too high, so at least you can't damage anything anymore (But be careful! Older monitors (and perhaps also some of the newer ones, I don't know) don't have this feature). After messing with things some more and finally creating a floppy with GRUB on it, I discovered that the system would just freeze if I tried to touch the hard drive before a Linux kernel booted. I traced this back to a BIOS setting: my system has a known buggy CMD640 IDE interface, and I had disabled the write prefetch option in the BIOS. That only matters to exim. Once exim decides it is taking care of the domain, it places the mail in the users mail box. POP3 just allows the user to get to the their mail box regardless of what domain caused it to get their. If this is correct, POP3 has no notion of virtual domain or even domains. The MTA (exim) is the only part that cares about domains. I mean, if I have some users with same name under different domains, how to serve pop3 for them? Is it possible? All mail for that user will go to the same mail box regardless of what domain it is sent to. Their might be another way of doing this so you can support [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] Smith being two separate users. This would probably use aliases of some type. I can't tell by your question which way you meant this. If it is they same person with two different domain emails (my case) here is what I did in exim.conf: qualify_domain = doubleesolutions.com local_domains = localhost:doubleesolutions.com:desinc.com Mail to either domain goes to user pmchale. Otherwise, you might have to alias [EMAIL PROTECTED] to local user smith1 and [EMAIL PROTECTED] to local user smith2. How to do this in exim, I'm not sure. You might try http://www.exim.org.
