Q: mp3 wav / sound
Hi to all! I can't play .wav or .mp3 files on my system. I can play cdroms. cdparanoia seems to work and encodes cdrom-tracks to .wav files, but when I try to play them no sound at all (splay, mpg123 ...) I have a Creative VibraX card installed. Question: 1. Is the VibraX card the problem ? 2. What HW is needed ? 3. What resources are needed to play mp3 or wav files ? 4. What modules do I need ? I looked back this list till February, but couldn't find no information. I'm ready to buy a new soundcard etc. if necessary. Installed is here potato with kernel 2.2.17prexxx Please give me some hints where to look/read or your experience. Best regards Michael -- Michael Steiner, Minorgasse 35, A-1140 Vienna, Austria

What resources are needed to play mp3 or wav files ? Install the sox package, which will give you sox and the play wrapper which can play wavs. mpg123 is a popular (non-free) console mp3 player, or XMMS for a graphical one (GTK-based). 4. You'll need to add 'exec' to the list of options there. (Also, rw is the default anyway, and you only need to explicitly mention defaults if there are no other options.) However, I don't think you should be mounting that partition as a user; for a start, if you don't mount it at boot-time you'll have an empty home directory. You are mounting it at boot-time above (though the last field should be 2, not 1, when it's not the root directory), so there's no need for the user option anyway. System partitions (like /usr/local and /usr/share, which you also mentioned) should definitely not be mounted as a user. The main use for that option is probably removable drives like floppies and CD-ROMs. In summary: /dev/hda8 /home/jsext2defaults0 2 -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: frustration with debian installation
Bob Edwards [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: BE (1) What all do I have to configure if I want to use gnome as my gui ? There are a couple of different things you can do. One is to install the GNOME Display Manager (gdm), and select GNOME off of its menu. Another is to create a $HOME/.xsession file (which is a shell script), and add 'exec gnome-session' to it. In any case, you'd need the core GNOME stuff installed. One easy way is to run 'apt-get install task-gnome-desktop' as root. BE (2) Am I correct in my understanding that the x-windows system is the BE standard debian gui, and I can choose to use gnome instead? No. Essentially, X is a system for causing windows to be drawn on screens and stuff to be drawn inside them. It doesn't intrinsically come with any particular GUI. This means that even if you're running a standard GNOME desktop, you can still run other random X applications (including things that are technically part of KDE). Generally, you'll run some sort of program as a sort of shell; traditionally, this has been a window manager, so if you shut down your window manager, you'll exit your X session as well. gnome-session performs a similar sort of function; pressing the GNOME log out button will stop gnome-session and log you out. BE (3) how do I configure gnome? Generally via the GNOME Control Center, under the GNOME Settings menu. BE (4) I have readLinux system commands by Volkerding and Reichard, and BE got some help there, but at the moment I'm extraordinarily frustrated. If you have specific questions, this list can probably help to answer them. What'd you get? (just out of curiosity) (1) What all do I have to configure if I want to use gnome as my gui ? First of all I would suggest using Helix if you're wanting to use GNOME. The easy way to do this is to add the following line to your sources.list file (located at /etc/apt/sources.list) deb http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/distributions/debian unstable main After you do that, type apt-get update as root (assuming you're connected to the internet). Don't worry about the unstable mention up there. Helix works very well with Debian 2.2. Then type apt-get install task-helix-gnome. This will begin a massive download of all the stuff you need to run GNOME. After this is done, simply add the line exec gnome-session to your ~/.xinitrc file and you'll be off to the races. (2) Am I correct in my understanding that the x-windows system is the standard debian gui, and I can choose to use gnome instead? Well, it really doesn't work that way. First of all I'd warn against going around calling it X-Windows some folks get mighty irate, as that is not a valid name for XFree86. If you refer to it just as X, or XFree86, or the X Windowing System people will know what you mean, and it might save you some needless ridicule. With that out of the way, X is a software application that enables graphical display output. That's extremely simplified, but that's about all it does. To make that output useful ... i.e. allow things like bordered windows, desktop environments, etc ... you need some more software to manage the display output that X produces. Typically this is where your window manager comes in. Some simple window managers include Window Maker, Blackbox, Sawfish, etc. These different window managers provide different ways of managing the output generated by X, or rather they handle the framing and manipulation of raw windowed applications. These days you can go one step further and use something like KDE or GNOME. These things are Desktop Environments. The difference betwen a simple window manager and a desktop environment is the former doesn't attempt to create a unifiying interface accross all X applications, while the latter does. Using a desktop environment makes it easier to accomplish things like dragging a link from Netscape onto your desktop and having this turn into a clickable icon, etc. Of course you do have Enlightenment which as far as I can tell is more than a window manager but less than a desktop environment. Anyway, if you're curious you can install and play with whatever graphical environment you want. This is fairly easy to do. Lets say for instance you wanted to check out Window Maker ... you would just do apt-get install wmaker to download and install the program. Then you would edit your ~/.xinitrc file. Putting a # in front of the current exec gnome-session line (effectively commenting it out) and adding the line exec wmaker. Ta Da, when you fire up X you'll be using Window Maker. If you decide you don't like it, simply remove the # from the exec gnome-session line and put in it in front of the exec wmaker line. If you're wondering what this Helix nonsense is ... Helix is simply an effort to package up and unify GNOME. Personally I think the improvements that are coming out of this are very nice. (3) how do I configure gnome? Once you get GNOME running (see above), simply open the Gnome Control Center. You'll find this by clicking on the little Gnome foot, going to settings and then Gnome Control Center. A window will pop up that will allow you to change things to your liking. (4) I have readLinux system commands by Volkerding and Reichard, and got some help there, but at the moment I'm extraordinarily frustrated. And will probably remain so for a while. Linux takes a bit of getting used to, and certainly requires a significant degree of effort on the part of the user. But unlike those other operating system environments, when you figure out how to do something you've actually _learned_ something, as opposed to figuring out how to trick the system into doing something close to what you want. It may taste bad now, but you'll be better off in the long run. Heh ... couldn't resist. (5) I hate windows so bad, that I will never go back. Why do you hate windows so bad? (just out of curiosity) (6) please guide me through the jungle of configring my new debian OS so I can use this wonderful computer and debian to accomplish my long-held dream of establishing a publishing company. I set up true type font server according to the Debian mini-HOWTO which adds support for true type with xfstt in addition to xfs for regular fonts. Building Pine
I'm trying to help my gf set up Pine on a server at her college (since those silly students actually prefer it over mutt), and we're both running into the same compilation problem (with Woody on my box and Potato on the server). Using the pine4-src and pine4-diffs packages, after running debian/rules binary the compilation proceeds for a while and then ends with this: make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/pine4/pine4-4.21' test -f pine/pine.c -a -f debian/rules test root = `whoami` rm -rf debian/tmp install -d debian/tmp/DEBIAN debian/tmp/usr/lib/menu cd debian/tmp install -d usr/bin usr/man/man1 usr/doc/pine cd debian install -m 755 postinst postrm tmp/DEBIAN cd debian install -m 644 menu.pine tmp/usr/lib/menu/pine install bin/pine debian/tmp/usr/bin install: cannot stat `bin/pine': No such file or directory make[1]: *** [binaryPine] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/pine4/pine4-4.21' make: *** [binary-arch] Error 2 This error (or at least something very similar to it) occurs on both computers, in both Potato and Woody, and with both pine4 and pine396. I ended up pointing my gf to unofficial binary debs, but I'd really like to know what we're doing wrong. Glancing in the bin directory, it seems to have built pico, pilot, imapd, and mtest binaries fine, but as the error message states, there is no pine binary. -- Tom Most of us remain strangers to ourselves, hiding who we are, and ask other strangers, hiding who they are, to love us. -Leo Buscaglia

Some minor mail problems w/ Debian 2.2
Hello all, I've recently started using Debian 2.2, and I'm having a few weird mail issues popping up. If anyone could provide some assistance, or nudge me in the direction of some specific spot in the documentation, I'd appreciate it greatly. 1) Added the sources for the online repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list, did the apt-get upgrade thing, and am happily using Netscape 4.75 -- w/ one exception. When I enter the information for the pop/smtp server that I receive/send mail from, I cannot get any new mail. When I click on the 'Get Messages' icon, it(Netscape) tells me that I have no new messages. Like heck I don't! At the time I had something like 200+ messages on my Yahoo! account. I've set this up in the past on other systems (Mandrake, SuSE, RedHat), and I'd be interested on why it doesn't seem to be functional on Debian. 2) I have exim installed currently. I tried sendmail, as my previous setup had been sendmail + install-sendmail (a perl setup script), which had been pretty painless, and had gotten everything delivered w/ the right addresses and whatnot, plus setup fetchmail easily. I tried doing the same setup on Debian, and it doesn't seem to get along real well w/ the install-sendmail script. Since I'm not masochistic enought to want to edit sendmail for my simple home setup, I was looking towards masqmail, but I need to know what I need to do to get it to accept mails from fetchmail. I read thru the docs, but something wasn't working right, because fetchmail couldn't get a response on port 25. 3) After setting up fetchmail, and running it, I seem to be getting a bunch of mails (so far over a dozen) which show up in Netscape as having no title, being from [EMAIL PROTECTED] (me), and the header is displayed as part of the message. As such, the Netscape filters don't move them to the appropriate folders correctly. What could be causing this? Thanks for your time, and any help is greatly appreciated, Monte _ Do You Yahoo!? Re: Tru Type Fonts Question
Hello! X cannot handle the ttf dir although xfs is installed. Instead, you must add unix/:7100 to your XF86config, because, I think, xfs-xtt (you must install THIS VERSION, not normal xfs!!!) serves the fonts to X via this tcp port. And you have to create xfonts.scale etc. etc. etc. in the dir with the fonts (I don't know these steps exactly any more, see howto) and the ttf-dir has to be added to the catalog line in the file /etc/X11/xfs/config. 4) Ran the mkttfdir utility. Shouldn't there be a ttmkfdir utility??? Where is it??? Don't know about it, but sounds like they are equal or someone as written the name in a false way in some howto or description you've read! But, all of this isn't necessary if you just download the xfstt package, install and use it. It's really easier to set up, I think, and I don't know any disadvantage of xfstt in comparison to xfs-xtt. I think I'll do this after I've wasted my time setting up xfs-xtt instead of xfstt some weaks ago. ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/dists/potato/main/binary-i386/x11/xfstt_1.1.deb Kind Regards, Stephan Hachinger - Original Message - From: Christopher W. Re: EXIM mail problems
My ISP is Telerama.com in Pgh. Pa. When I set up exim, I used telerama.com as the smtp. I also said to use telerama.com as the domain name after the @ on outgoing mail. Now when I send email to anyone at telerama.com it gets sent back because the name is not found at telerama.com. What did I do wrong? How do I fix? my ISP is bezeqint.net and its mail server is mail.bezeqint.net. Attached my /etc/exim.conf and /etc/email-addresses. Although this setup is not perfect it works most of the time. Please note that rakefet is not a qualified domain name although one might think it is when reading thsese files. rakefet is the name that I have given to my machine. Sorry about that, its all lower case 'xfce' in apt-get. Although dpkg -s is not case sensitive. Any way, if you install 'xfce' you can still run the gnome task bar and any gnome apps, but i prefer the XFce panel. On Sat, 7 Oct 2000 20:41:40 -0400, Christopher W. Hi. I have recently acquired an old 386 sx computer with an 82 meg HDD. I want to put Debian on it. A long time ago, I had gone online and asked around for this before, and someone had pointed me to 7 floppies worth of files from the www.debian.org ftp site, and I actually did manage to install an extremely basic instillation of Debian. I would like to do that again, but I do not know which files I need. Could you please tell me which files I need to download in order to once again install Debian on my comp? Thank you for your time :) See ya's Take a look at the FAQ. You can find it in /usr/share/doc/debian/FAQ/. _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. apt-cdrom add trouble
My apt-cdrom add is not working. I was able to read from cdrom normally until I installed a custom kernel image 2.2.17 with scsi support to enable cd recording. After that I run dselect to install wmanager, but then it couldn't read the cd in hdc, which had been able to so far, since I made the installation from the 3 binaries (intel). I assume something got screwed up when the cd drives were changed to scsi (?), but have no idea how to fix it. What I get is ide-scsi:hdc:unsupported command in request queue (0) end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 64 isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=16:00, iso_blknum=16, block=36 E: failed to mount CD-ROM Have no clue. Please help. Thanks, Antonio.

Linux Backups mini-FAQ Karsten M. Self kmself@ix.netcom.com Written: Saturday October 7, 2000 Modified: Saturday October 7, 2000 Following are my general recommendations for system backups, with a strong focus toward an individual workstation or small network with relatively informal practices. I run Debian GNU/Linux, there will be some variants of file locations for other Linux distributions or proprietary Unices. Larger networks or server farms should probably look into a more structured system. This document is divided into discussions of: o Hardware o Software o What to back up o How to back it up o When to back it up o Further reading o Sample backup script Hardware There are several alternatives for backup hardware. In roughly descending order of my preference, they are: o SCSI tape o CDR-Writable or CDR-Re-writable media o DLT and other high-performance tape solutions o Magneto-Optical o QiC / Travan tape o Networked storage o Removable storage (120 MB Superfloppy, Zip, Jaz, Floppy) o Ancillary storage (Additional onboard HD storage) SCSI I purchased an HP SureStore 2000 DAT drive in October of 1997. It's been used for semi-regular backups of my home system for the past three years. No problems; I can recommend HP Surestore SCSI storage strongly. In comparing costs of SCSI to other tape drive types, you'll want to take into account both drive and media costs. At a count of about ten media units (tapes), the SCSI became the cheaper option -- ~$9 per 4 GB tape rather than ~$35 for Travan/QIC cartridges. SCSI DAT is also a time-tested and highly dependable technology. Pricewatch lists current costs as HP media at $3/unit, Travan 8 GB media run $20-24. DAT is solid, dependable, proven technology, and the media are cheap and reusable. Just what you're looking for in a backup. What's nice about SCSI tape is that in three years of admittedly light use -- say 1-8 times/month, I've never had a write error. While B/U's take some time, they only need to be run once. My current backup script hits key system files, announces (via wall) its progress, then rewinds and verifies the tape, and finally rewinds and ejects it. Minimal fuss. I've been backing up more frequently in the past six months or so -- every couple of days if I can help it. The downside is that tape capacity, relative to today's drive sizes, is limited. The system costing me about $400 new, provides ~4GB compressed storage, which works for me, but you'll have to look at higher capacity tape drives for your 9-40GB disks out now. A comparably priced drive today would have about 10-20 GB capacity, which should suffice. Comparative pricing of 4mm SCSI DAT units - Capacity Vendorraw/cmpr Cost Media --- HP2/4$120$3 HP4/8$185$6 HP4/8$185$6 HP 12/24 $603 $11 * HP 20/40 $810 $27 ** --- Notes: * Other vendor pricing starts at ~$320. ** Other vendor pricing lower. --- I'm citing Hewlett Packard largely as they have a good name in quality, both anecdotally and in direct personal experience for work and private use. Sony's 12/24 and 20/40 drives are about half the cost of the equivalent HP drive. At the upper end of the range, tape changers start appearing, with compound capacities into the hundreds of GB. CDR / CDRW -- Of the remaining alternatives, CDR/CDRW and QiC/Travan are probably the most popular in current systems, and might be considered a necessity. CD-RW drives start at about $130, with good branded drives running $150-$160. High-end is a Creative Labs 2x4x32x CD-RW for $189. For media, a CD-R 200 pack runs $147 - $261, or about $1.13/GB. While I don't have specific experience with CDs, my understanding is that they're sensitive to buffering, and it's often helpful to create an online image file, then cut to media, requiring additional online storage. Media size, at 650 MB, is significantly limited relative to tape -- it
