Kernel 2.0.34 - 2.2.17?
I seem to need to finally upgrade my kernel to 2.2.17. I have been posponding this as long as possible, not because of the fine Debian upgrade package, but because of expected networking trouble whilst having to part with ipmasq. Now it seems I need to take the dive (In comes the first Win2000 box, so I need to upgrade Samba which does no longer run on 2.0 kernels). I have a Linux 2.2 (upgraded from 2.1 apart from the kernel) box that has a cable modem on eth0 (DHCP) and a LAN on eth1 (192.168.1.1). I have miraculously managed to get ipmasqing to work a year or two ago. Does anyone have any suggestions to what I have to expect (and do) if I download the 2.2.17 source and compile that on this box? Files to change, settings to make (docs to read ;-)). Can we have a bit less FUD about people having a policy not to talk about how things work, or about data hiding, or whatever, please? I'm sure it's infuriating to the people who've put in all the work to write all the good (and largely unread) documentation out there. As a provocation it served its purpose. However I admit that I was unfair. But I stil think that my question for a more in-depth HOWTO is a valid one. I have reread the man pages of dselect, dpkg and apt-get, plus the relevant parts of the FAQ. They offer a lot of information, but of a rather superficial kind. 'In order to ... , type ...'. For many of the options described, you do not see what information is being used, and how it changes your system. In his many replies to cries for help Colin has given ample proof that this kind of information is badly needed. It is illustrated as well by the many 'I suppose ...' etc which you can often read in the explanations given by intermediate gurus. Some people suggest that I should read the developer's or packaging manuals or even the source. But I am not a developer, and i have never succeeded in reaing more than ten lines of someone else's C code if it goes beyond the 'hello world' level. I bought a Linux CD containing Red Hat Linux 5.2. I like Linux therefore decided to install it. I ran fips a new partition was created. Then as mentioned in the mannual I rebooted the system with the Linux boot disk inside, it started the process. But for some reason I had to go out so I aborted it. The next time I tried doing it nothing happened, it straight went into windows. I tried this a number of times, but still nothing happened. Then I tried rebooting with Windows 98 Startup disk, still it normally went into windows. What could be the problem?
Re: Okay, I give up. What do I put in apt-get's sources.list?
Erm there *may* be an issue there with the ~ character. I don't know if its still the case, but you don't use ~, you use %7E to generate the ~. screensaver/dpms
I had posted this quetion a week ago and got the response: man xset This does not appear to do what I require. How do I turn off the screensaver and/or dpms by default for all users. Also wish both to be off while users are logged out to the xdm login screen. The command xset reverts to defaults when the user logs out, so will not work. I searched the internet, and through my /etc directory with no solution yet. For some reason my system sometimes locks when the screen saver starts, so it needs to be off. If it would be easier to use another MTA i am happy to do so although i hear that exim is the best. you don't need to tell your mta to mutt, it's just standard sendmail compatible. .muttrc is usually not created by mutt, you can do it yourself and put some relevant options in it. system wide config is in /etc/Muttrc for mutt. mutt hasn't anything to do with sending mail, at least not more then composing it and pasing it to exim. the visible mail name can be set to some subdomain you get mail for, or change the from address in mutt so the visible mail name will not be used by mutt. man 5 muttrc for more info about .muttrc and /etc/Muttrc (same format, last one just system wide, .muttrc system specific). -- ,---. BTW, the other NIC that works fine is detected by kernel as: eth1: Macronix 98715 PMAC rev 37 at 0xe400, 00:80:C6:EE:A2:E3, IRQ 10. I compiled in support for the card into the kernel that I am using, 2.2.17 from sources with no patches, using the 3c59x.c driver. The card is detected fine by the kernel at boot time as follows: eth0: 3Com 3c905B Cyclone 100baseTx at 0xe800, 00:01:02:ca:90:fb, IRQ 11 8K byte-wide RAM 5:3 Rx:Tx split, 10baseT interface. Enabling bus-master transmits and whole-frame receives. (BTW, I forced the card into 10baseT mode using a 3Com dos utility that I got from their web site) The link led at the back of my cable modem (Terayon Tera Pro) is lit green. The 10baseT (link?) led on the 3Com NIC is lit green as well. I am using a CAT5-UTP cable with RJ-45 connectors to connect the 3Com NIC to the cable modem (same cable with which the Rogers supplied generic 10/100 NIC works without any problems). When I try and ping any host e.g. www.debian.org, the Send and Receive lights on the cable modem blink almost simultaneously every 1 sec. apart. But there aren't any blinking lights on the back of the NIC. there probably no lights blinking if you send/receive data on your nic, if there lights blinking on your cable modem, at least transmitting from your 3c905b. you could try the 3c905 drivers from 3com at: http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/linux.htm you could try to run tcpdump -i eth0 (apt-get install tcpdump first, if not installed yet). this will show all traffic on the network, called sniffing. if you don't see any traffic, and you can ping from your nic to out (but no return, while your modem recieves packets) the nic is probably broken. you could try to use it under windoze, with windoze drivers using the same cable and modem I am at my wits end trying to figure out why this 3Com 3c905B NIX isn't working. I have tried the following (not in the same order) to debug/fix this problem: (1) upgraded the BIOS on my ABIT BH6 motherboard to the latest one available (2) inserted the 3Com NIC into different PCI slots on the mobo (3) took out my SoundBlaster PCI128 sound card from the motherboard, then subsequently took out the other generic NIC from my system so that the only PCI card in my system was the 3Com NIC (4) changed the NIC configuration using a 3Com dos utility from the default autosense/autonegotiate to 10Base-T media type (5) had a Rogers tech verify that there wasn't any problem with my cable modem (which BTW works fine with their supplied generic 10/100 NIC) Neither of the above solved the problem. I am using a static IP configuration with values set in /etc/network/interfaces. I am having the exact same problems with this same NIC in a second machine - my brand new PIII machine which also has the same NIC. I'd appreciate any information/comments/suggestions in how to fix this problem. I am using kernel-2.2.17 with the latest woody packages. If I am unable to fix this problem in the next couple of days, I will be replacing these 2 NICs with some other 10/100 ones. Any recommendations for a good PCI 10/100 NIC that just works with the current 2.2.17 kernels with compiled-in support and without requiring any extra module arguments/parameters ? I'll be looking to get 2 of these NICs of the same brand and model initially. i never have problems with mixing multiple nics, different types/makes -- ,---. Help getting PS/2 mouse working, please
I'm just installing Debian (Potato) after a long absence from the Linux/Debian community. The machine I am presently installing it on is a clone, and has a bit of wierd hardware. The mose's PS/2 card for instance is on an add in card, the serial and parallel ports (at least it appears to be from outside). How can I test and make certain it is working, and get it configured corectly so that it works in console mde, and passes data on through to the X server? dmesg reveals that a PS/2 mouse port is detected at boot time. Re: Dependency problems
The latest dpkg upgrade seems to have removed the force-overwrite feature from apt, which is normally set in the unstable branch, but removed when it comes to stable. Add the lines: DPkg { Options {--force-overwrite;} } to the file /etc/apt/apt.conf (or create one if it don't exist). And then file a bug for gnome-print. Greetings, joachim

[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Colin Watson) writes: I don't think that's what Sean meant. If, in dselect, you use '-' to mark a package for removal - or use 'apt-get remove' - then a package's configuration files won't be removed, and some state about the package will remain in the system. However, if you use '_' in dselect, or 'apt-get --purge remove', then the package's configuration files will be removed too, and /var/lib/dpkg/status will forget that it ever existed. Getting OT: That's not quite correct. The `Package:', `Status:', `Priority:' and `Section:' entries of a purged package remains forever, so the status file grows on and on over the years and keeps even entries of packages which no longer exists. I wonder if this slows down the installation process and if `purging' the status file from those purged package entries would help, but I didn't dare that as yet. Greetings, joachim

Re: Problems with the 3Com 3c905B NIC
FWIW I've got a working PIII/3c905b/terayon setup. My only initial problem with it was dyslexia: 509 is not the same as 905! IOW, you need to use the right driver, which in my case means alias eth0 3c59x in /etc/modutils/aliases. Before that I tried two different NICs to no avail, which leads me to believe NICs may be inherently flaky. So maybe try another one (I convinced my local h/w vendor to lend me this one, slightly used, and I ended up buying it). -chris

Auxiliary screen
Hi debianers, I put my hands on a old 15 screen and scavenged a old PC to get a S3 PCI graphic card which can be installed on one of the free PCI slots of my current potato box. I would like to configure things in such a way that the new screen is say tty8 so that I can use it to display some interesting things and even switch to it (mean attach to it the keyboard) by something like Ctrl+Alt+F8. I do not realy need to put X on that screen, a simple tty will suffice so I do not think that I need (and in any case I don't want to) install the XFree 4.0.x thing. Anyone could help? At least by providing a good documentation pointer?
