Yo tengo puesta la Debian GNU/Linux Potato 2.2 que Alcove e HispaLinux ofrecieron en el último Congreso HispaLinux (3 CDs) y el Cd de LaEspiral que sacó la revista TodoLinux. Con esto tengo todos los paquetes que necesito y bastante más (160 MB de juegos :-) Hasta ahora no he tenido ningún problema con dependecias de paquetes, salvo que al actualizar algunas cosas para pasarme al kernel 2.4.1 no me dejó desinstalar las versiones viejas, pero no problem: las sobreescribo con las nuevas (compiladas) y listo. El apt-get me dá una salida diciéndome que fallan dependencias... Lo intento con aquellos paquetes de los cuales depende y nada. Intento desinstalar los paquetes que me ha instalado de netscape y de communicator, y tampoco me los desinstala. Es bastante extraño. Intentándolo con el dpkg le digo... dpkp -i netscape-loquesea0 (no me acuerdo del resto del nombre) entonces me dice que fallan las dependencias con netscape-loqesea1 y me dice que fallan las dependencias con el paquete netscape-loquesea0 (el pez que se muerde la cola). Quizás el problema fué que cuando instalé potato (los cuatro cds de sólo programadores linux), también metí en source.list o como se llame el cd de la espiral que vino en un número posterior de la misma revista. Lo que quiero, por favor si es posible, quitarme como sea posible los paquetes del netscape y communicator que son imposible desinstalar. Y posteriormente y partiendo de 0 con ayuda de uds, ver si puedo instalar el netscape. Hola, me voy a comprar un PC pa'casa y simplemente haceros algunas consultas y/o confirmaciones de cosas que he mirado: * Tarjeta de sonido Sound Blaster 128 PCI. Está soportada en kernel 2.2.x. Usa el chipset ES1373, por tanto hay que compilar el soporte para este módulo en el kernel y ya está, ¿no? * ¿Alguien tiene referencias de la placa base QDI Advance 10F FCPGA ATA-100? Parece buena, pero me gustaría leer opiniones de la gente al respecto. En principio voy a pillar ésta. Por cierto, le he pedido al vendedor que me diga el chipset que usa ... no me ha facilitado esa información. * ¿Qué tal el monitor Daewoo de 17''? (ref. 1280x1024, OSD :-¿?) Me lo venden por 48.000 pelas IVA incluido. Si estás usando versiones del núcleo diferentes a la 2.2.X debería ser similar. Así, tal como se queda, funciona para imprimir texto (o el código PS de un fichero postscript :-) Pero existe una aplicación llamada magicfilter que permite que imprimas postcript con tu impresora. Obviamente, esto lo hace con ayuda de ghostscript, así que no te debe faltar. Ni que decir tiene que tambien te será útil lprng o lpr para gestionar la cola de impresión. La configuración de magicfilter es sencilla, tan solo necesitas decirle que filtro debe aplicar para poder imprimir cualquier tipo de formato. De esta manera, tras ejecutar magicfilterconf: 1.- Te pregunta por el nombre de la impresora. Ese no tiene por qué ser el nombre de fábrica de la impresora. 2.- Luego un nombre corto para el directorio de la cola de impresión 3.- Acto seguido, el nombre del dispositivo (/etc/lp0 o /etc/lp1) Yo uso lp0 y funciona, quizás te sirva de ayuda, puesto que tengo una HP 695 4.- Ahora toca la selección del filtro. Como es una HP Deskjet seleccionamos deskjet. 5.- Ya hemos terminado con esta impresora, si deseásemos poner más, JMP 1 Si no, escribimos done y terminamos. Este proceso nos ha creado un fichero (/etc/printcap) como el que sigue: (He obviado los comentarios) lp|hp695|HP Deskjet 695:\ :lp=/dev/lp0:sd=/var/spool/lpd/hp695:\ :sh:pw#80:pl#72:px#1440:mx#0:\ :if=/etc/magicfilter/deskjet-filter:\ :af=/var/log/lp-acct:lf=/var/log/lp-errs: Además ha creado el directorio /var/spool/lpd/hp695. magicfilterconf también ha reiniciado el demonio de impresión, con lo que el binomio impresora-linuxBox está listo para imprimir postcript, texto... problemas PHP3 en inestable
Hola, Tengo instalado el php3 en módulo del apache, para una máquina con la distribución inestable. Bueno,casi todo funciona bien, pero el otro día me encontré con un problema que no sé si es por un error del php3 o del apache de unstable. Quería hacerme un lector sencillo de datos en XML o similar, algo como RDF pero principalmente que me pudiese leer campos con varias líneas, etc. sin usar ningún backend de *SQL, quiero almacenar información de un sitio web en forma de datos, pero no puedo usar bases de datos, así que uso ficheros con campos en CSV o con algún separador. Pero cuando quiero usar campos muy largos, resulta absurdo. Me bajé algún script de la red, como el rsslib, que lee los RDF's de slashdot o barrapunto sin problemas... pero en teoría, porque a mi no me funciona. Empecé a mirar el código y descubrí que las llamadas a la función: ereg_replace no devolvían lo que tenían que devolver, por ejemplo: $cadena = esto tiene cuatro palabras; ereg_replace (cuatro, 4, $cadena); echo $cadena; Pues esto devuelve: esto tiene 4 sin más, cuando debería devolver esto tiene 4 palabras Teoricamente, ese script debería bajarse de la red el fichero *.rdf que le diga, pero tampoco funcionaba eso... Alguna idea? alguien sabe por qué puede ser esto... es que me parece que puede que ni siquiera sea cosa del módulo de PHP3 o del apache, sino de algo más complejo. Gracias de antemano. Bueno pues las etiquetas salían ahora desplazadas en la hoja y ya no coincidían. Si es por el Magicfiter nuevo o por otra razón no lo sé pero como tenía prisa para volver a sacar etiquetas pues entré en el fuente y ajusté el nuevo desplazamiento y listo. O puede ser debido a un nuevo fichero de configuración del ghostscript. Es un programa vital para mi. En fin como esto muchas cosillas más que van apareciendo pero lo importante ya me funciona todo. Si tuviera que vender lo que hago trabajaría de otra forma pero cuando trabajo para mi procuro obtener resultados lo antes posible y no suelo molestarme en arreglar lo que funciona. Nos ocurre a todos. Hacemos muchas cosas interesantes que se podrían convertir en un programa o manual muy útil, pero infelizmente no tenemos tiempo para hacer esos retoques pues nos aparecen nuevos problemas para resolver. Instalas Debian en la partición que usabas como raíz en Mandrake. Lo primero que te recomiendo es que hagas un back-up de /etc y /var (tal vez quepan en la partición de windows?). En /var suele estar el correo de los usuarios, páginas web, bases de datos, y otras cosas que podrás necesitar. No conozco Mandrake y por eso tendrás que pensar con cuidado que otros directorios usará Mandrake para ficheros de configuración o datos locales (ah, y si usas /usr/local y /root, guarda también copias de estos). En el paso en que te pide una partición swap, indica la que ya tienes; no necesitas volver a iniciarla. Te saltas el paso de crear particiones, creas un sistema de ficheros e2fs en la partición que usabas de raíz como si fuera una partición que acabas de crear, pero no tocas la que usabas como /home. Después monta la partición raíz nueva y monta en /home la partición que ya tenías para /home. El resto es lo normal, solo que al final antes de crear una cuenta para el primer usuario diferente de root, te aconsejo que si ya usabas el mismo nombre de usuario le cambies el nombre a /home/usuario y luego lo podrás mezclar no el nuevo /home/usuario que sea creado. Normalmente no necesitas crear nuevas cuentas diferentes de la de root, sino que lo que haces es copiar las líneas que hagan referencia a usuarios locales en /etc/passwd y /etc/group a los nuevos ficheros (teniendo cuidado de cambiar números de usuarios o grupos que ya existan y hacer chown a los respectivos /home/usuario). Espero que no se me haya olvidado nada, pero ya sabes que si te cargas con algo importante no te podré indemnizar :-) Saludos, Jaime

Buenas, Un dia de estos (espero la semana que viene) me quiero comprar un pc nuevo. Como siempre salen las dudas de si tendre problemas con linux etc. Pues eso, me habian recomendado una Matrox G450 o una Geforce 2 MX y me habian dicho que daba mas rendimiento la GeForce si no la queria exclusivamente para juegos. Me gustaria saber si alguien las ha probado, que soporte hay para linux de la GeForce (modulos, etc...). La matrox ya la conozco. Y tambien queria saber si realmente da mas rendimiento que la matrox. Tarjeta ati rage mobility
Hola: Gracias a Fermín Manzanedo tenemos de nuevo acentos con Mutt (aunque escribo desde el trabajo, los tengo en casa). Ruego vuestra ayuda ahora porque me han pasado una tarjeta Ati rage mobility para ranura AGP y no consigo hacerla funcionar, pese a poner xserver-mach64. Si hago XF86Setup, cuando intenta poner en marcha el servidor, se me cuelga el monitor (el piloto pasa del verde al naranja y se pone negro) y no puedo volver ni a X ni a la consola, con ctrl-alt-retr, ni ctrl-alt-Fx ni nada. Con xserver-SVGA también se apaga el monitor, pero puedo volver a la consola, bien con ctrl-alt-retr, bien con ctrl-alt-F1. Antes tenía una ViRGE S3 en ranura PCI. ¿Me falta algo? ¿Hay que indicar algo al BIOS que se me escapa, para usar la ranura AGP? Gracias anticipadas. Estoy sin gráficos :-( Un saludo.

Nas. Alguien podría explicarme como se aplican los parches a los paquetes. Instalé uno para ethereal ,evitaba la congelación de la ventana,pero esta aunque creo que anda mejor,se sigue congelando en ocasiones. Un saludo. César

Hej! Sitter och ska sätta upp en liten brandvägg på en debianburk. Har kollat runt och de flesta HOW-TO's tar upp redhats akitektur för att få startat upp t ex ipchains. Jag vill ju givetvis ha kvar inställningarna vid omstart osv. Inser att detta kanske ligger på Newbie-nivå, men skam den som ger sig... =) Speciellt kanske debianspecifikt material om ämnet i fråga. Har kollat runt lite, men hittar inte vart scripten initialiseras, har för mig att de ligger i /etc/rc2.d/ katalogen men hittar inget. Compile um kernel sem drives , ie., sem suporte a som, ppp, cdrom, etc. Verifique o que acontece. use fsck com a opção -c nas partições do linux para verificação física dos discos com o filesystem em readonly para saber se há problemas com o disco nas partições aonde vc. está instalando. use um programa chamado de memtest ( procure ele no google ) para verificar o relacionamento da memória com a placa mãe. Eu tive duas placas que erravam ao se comunicar com a memória. O teste é muito completo e leva algumas horas. Os problemas de instabilidade que eu tive com linux foram sempre de origem de falhas de hardware.

Ola Henrique, Eu assisti uma palestra do Sandro (ou do Paulo, do escritorio de Sao Paulo) e um deles mencionou uma materia que saiu na RdoL sobre uma escola de Osasco que adotou o Linux. Eu nao consegui achar a revista e estou precisando muito entrar em contato com esta escola para trocar ideias, pois estou instalando o Linux em outra escola na regiao de Itapevi (Grande Sao Paulo). Gostaria de pedir este favor a voce: seria possivel me passar email/endereco/fone da escola de Osasco, referente a esta materia? Se alguem (Macan - ColBand) souber de alguma outra escola que tenha feito coisa semelhante, i.e., adotado Linux em servidores, desktops, laboratorios, gostaria muito de entrar em contato. (se voce estiver dando overclock, ponha a placa de volta no clock normal!) 3. saida de lspci -v (rode como root) ? 4. mensagens de boot do kernel? 5. trocar pentes de memoria nao adianta. Rode o memtest86 (procure na rede, ou instale o do debian, pacote hwtools) na placa por 24h e veja se nao tem defeito mesmo. 6. Compile um kernel sem APM e veja se funciona direito na sua placa. 7. Tente isolar o problema. Ligue a maquina e deixe ela quieta (sem atividade de rede, teclado, disco). Pifa? Agora ponha so' atividade de teclado. Pifa? ponha atividade de disco. pifa? Areia com grude :-P É uma pasta de silicio que melhora a transferência de calor por eliminar espaços de ar entre um dispositivo e outro (CPU e cooler). Custa MUITO barato e é inofensiva (não recomendo comer :-) ). Melhora a transferência de calor em até 60% dependendo do dissipador... Check the version with 'gpm -v'. I've got 1.17.8 and it works fine. You've got networking in your kernel (this is silly, nearly impossible you haven't). Do you run a debian system at all? Anyway this is strange. What kind of a system are you runnign there? If you can, try reinstalling gpm. I use the XF86Setup program. I found that when I told it I had a PS2, my mouse would stop working in the setup program. Use the default Microsoft mouse and you should be good to go. (But answer the rest of the questions or nothing else will work for you grin) Good Luck

I am trying to install Debian on my pc without any success. When I am prompted to install after following prevoius instructions I am to select the install source. when I select CDROM as that is what came with the book, the response say cdrom mount failed. In the bookit says to usedselect alt+f2 keys but I can not do that untill I have a password and I can not set a password until the system is installed I am confused and depressed. what do I have to do to get this installed? from cd __ Get personalized email addresses from Yahoo! xdm delays
hey, when i log in through xdm, i am presented with a precisely 60 second long delay before the first line of my .xsession is executed. in fact, using root privileges to modify the xdm files, i found out that /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup_0 (which calls /etc/X11/xdm/Xstartup) is executed and finishes, but then the 60 second delay kicks in before either of /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession_0 and /etc/X11/xdm/Xsession is executed. so the problem isn't within the user configuration but within the xdm configuration, and the 60 seconds lead me to think that it is some form of name resolution problem or otherwise network related, and my guess goes for XDMCP - which i haven't configured, but port 6000 is open... furthermore, my name resolution in terms of DNS and whatever works perfectly fine. any ideas where the problem is, and more importantly, how to fix it??? thanks, martin [greetings from the heart of the sun]# echo [EMAIL PROTECTED]:1:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@@@.net -- la lune, c'est comme les canards il faut aimer caresser les chats pour avoir envie d'y aller

I remember RedHat and its ilk preferring some environment (KDE, Gnome, whatever) to a simple window manager... is it possible that this timeout is from trying to start one of those and failing repeatedly? Why am I logged out?
Hi all Hmm, when I am idle for, say, more than half an hour, I am automatically logged out of gnome. Why could that be? Is there a daemon running, looking for idle users and kick them out of the system? Or is it a problem with Xscreensaver? Gnome? Anything else? I'm not sure whether this has been tried yet When I upgraded to X4.0.2, I did lose the cursor (it was moving but invisible). Turned out the xserver was not upgraded, so it was still using the xserver-svga 3.3.6, instead of using xserver-xfree86. Once that was installed, cursor came back. Thanks, both to you, and the others who suggested the same (sort of) thing :-) So I've been there, done that, installed the package. Great. Now it says it can't find the serial module. Serial module? I don't remember even seeing an option for that. It seems kerneld is looking in /etc/modules for the list of modules to load at startup, where, sure enough, it lists serial as one which it should load, and no it isn't in /lib/modules/any directory/my kernel version. Kapps not threading properly?
I have this strange problem with Knode and Kmail. Neither one threads properly. The threads are broken and scattered. But this only happens with my ISP (Road Runner). If I use a different news/mail server everything works correctly. Unfortunately I *need* the services from my provider, and this problem makes these apps pretty much unusable. Usenet and mailing lists aren't much fun when things don't thread correctly ;-). Any advice greatly appreciated. TIA, jt PS I do know I could use other apps. I usually just use slrn for news, but I would like to get this sorted out nontheless :-). And other apps like tin/slrn/pan/sylpheed/mutt etc. do thread correctly...wierd stuff.

How to convert graphics formats
I used to have a program called convert which changed, e.g. pcx to xpm or whatever. It seems to have disappeared and I can't find it on the debian site. Anyone know where it's gone? getting aliases in mutt
This (from mutt's manual) doesn't work for me: In addition, at the various address prompts, you can use the tab character to expand a partial alias to the full alias. If there are multiple matches, mutt will bring up a menu with the matching aliases. In order to be presented with the full list of aliases, you must hit tab with out a partial alias, such as at the beginning of the prompt or after a comma denoting multiple addresses. In the alias menu, you can select as many aliases as you want with the select-entry key (default: RET), and use the exit key (default: q) to return to the address prompt. How do I get this? KDM crash
I was working in KDE 2.0 fine. I had installed licq via dselect. I run Debian 2.2 r2. I tried to bring up the menu editor to make a link on it to licq. But everytime I clicked on the menu editor, it would not come up. Stupidly I hit ctrl+alt+backspace to get out of kde so I could restart the X server. KDM started to come up the the screen went back to console mode. I rebooted, but the same thing happens. I used dselect to un-install kdm and then reinstall it, no luck. I installed GDM, it comes up on boot, but when I try to log in, I choose KDE as the session to load, but it starts to load, then kicks me back out to GDM. If I type startx it x comes up, but without a window manager, just the grey screen. I've looked in the system error logs, but find nothing. If I type kdm it just gives me another prompt, no errors. keyboard bell on console
How do you disable the keyboard bell at the console (not in X)? I have debian on my laptop and I have a fetish for tab-completion. I had the square white box cursor problem once on an ELSA Winner 1000 T3D and got rid of it by disabling the hardware cursor. Appropriate section of XF86Config follows below, note the 'option sw_cursor' line. Can anyone suggest a way to monitor a process and restart it if it stops? I seem to remember some discussion about this on debian-user, but I haven't been able to track it down in the archives. Mike
Cannot get iptables to work in 2.4.1 and compiling question.
Hi, I get the error "command not found" when I type "iptables". I know I compiled every "net" option in the kernel (choosed y). What am I doing wrong? Not much to go on, I know Also what does "make modules" do, does it create an image like "make bzImage"? I have 2 comps running linux at home: a 1Ghz t-bird and a p166. Compiling on the p166 is painfully long. I would like to compile everything on the 1Ghz and then transfer thebzImage and the "modules image" (if there is one, following make modules) to the p166 and make modules_install there. Is that possible? Or would I need to make dep on both comps, make bzImage on the 1ghz, transfer the image and make modlues and make modules_install on the p166? Thx in advanced.
Default apache configs in testing
Umm.. someone else notice something mighty fishy with the default conf's in testing's apache? Missing directory names in some sections - modules used in default config commented out..

mysql-server problems
I have mysql-server 3.23.31-1 installed and it is not accepting any tcp connections. The config is alright, set to accept tcp on 3306. xmcd as non-root user
After a dist-upgrade, xmcd will no longer run unless I am logged in as root (I am running testing). I used to be able to run it as a user. When I start it from a shell, I get the following message: xmcd Fatal Error: Xmcd binary permissions error: It should be setuid root.
