Re: mi debian no reconoce 2 tarjetas eth

guarda.

/etc/modules a mano o usas modconf (opcion
recomendada).

opciones

device=/dev/mouse
responsiveness=
repeat_type=
type=ms
append=

estos son los mensajes del syslog:

May 22 17:37:25 kal /usr/sbin/gpm[31027]: Skipping a data packet (?)

May 22 17:52:46 kal /usr/sbin/gpm[31138]: /var/run/gpm.pid: No existe el

2001-05-22 Thread José A . Navarro Ramón
Hola:

¡Ah! Tengo potato.

Saludos.

Hola.

¿Alguna idea?

Llama a /sbin/ifconfig directamente.

a outra.

Note bem as palavras certeza, e email.

do Manoj.

2001-05-22 Thread Arian Novruzi
Hi,
I'm precising what I have done - may be you say me if I'm
doing wright and what I have to modify in my installation.
-I use a couple of CDs that I have burned (note that I have
not the option multi-CD),
-I make a partition and
-I continue to install the services suggested by the CD-ROM
(at that time, I dont'install any particular driver, neither
the network).
-I don't know what image is chosen but I give for path:
/debian/dists/potato/main/disks-i386/current
-after this my system is rebooted correctly and I continue
with installing packages - I choose tasksel and it'all.
-I use XF86Config of my previous Redhat and X server works fine
-problem with mouse - it is linked to gpmdata device; after a
painful work I realised that it worked only when I run gpm
-I tried to install the modem (it's a win modem, Lucent). This
seemed to be Ok with the ltmodem568 package.
-I tried to install a ppp connection but the same script I use
in RedHat didn't worked.
-I installed Enlightment and Gnome, but graphical interface more
bizarre and difficult to work than that one I have not seen!

Having so pain;-) I get back temporary to RedHat.
It's all I have experimented. I don't know if my CD-s are the
right one (I have no seen anywhere that vanilla flavour).
Another question, expect xf86setup, does there are in Debian any
text tool to configure different hardware?

Any clue, suggestion or precised experience (this definetly would
be the best) is helpful.

Regards,
Arian.

Stick with a debian based distribution, sure it seems a little harder if you

  Hi all,

I'm wondering if somebody has succeded installing Debian
in a Armada E500, or in a laptop in general.

Personally, I found installation of Debian quite frustrating, although
I like this Linux distribution. It's really pity that a dood
  distribution
like Debian doesn't recognize nothing in my system while RedHat
recognizes all, without problem (expect modem - winmodem).
Another thing, I installed Gnome and Enlighment but the graphical
interface was so strange and difficult to work - I like the design of
  Gnome under Redhat.

After 4 attemps, I succede to install the X server and
  finally the mouse.
But no success of installing the modem (I didnt' try the
ethernet card). Because of this I get back into RedHat but
I intend to try installing Debian again - because I like it
  apt package.

I appreciate any successful experiance with Debian on laptops or
any other clue (I'm not a linux expert - just a basic user).

  Thanks - arian

Netscape Problems

2001-05-22 Thread Diot Heck
Hi, I am having problems using netscape.

I am currently trying to use 4.76. The command
'netscape' (which ends up at
/usr/lib/netscape/base-4/wrapper) ends with this
result:

Netscape: Ignoring unsupported format code in mailcap
file: %{
Bus error

I have also tried netscape 4.77 with the same result.
Interestingly (to me anyways) is that if I run
/usr/lib/netscape/476/communicator/communicator-smotif.real
netscape works fine. Of course I can't do this
because it doesnt load up my configurations which is
something I would like :)

Anyways I'm not too sure if anyone can give me the
solution to this problem, but someone might be able to
help me solve it. I have no clue what to try. I'm
pretty sure the Bus error isn't caused by the mailcap
error.

Please CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] because I use
netscape for mail and so I'm not subscribed to
debian-user.

Thanks,
Diot

that the machine has been broken into since absolutely nothing has shown
up in my logs, no port scans, no TCP/IP connections, nothing in my

Lots of possible reasons. Usual suspects are flakey hardware or
misbehaving modules. System logs may be helpful.

My own system lockups/reboots under GNU/Linux have been:

  - Bad video driver.
  - sambafs bug in 2.2.14.
  - SpeedStep (aka Geyserville).

Specific characteristics of what kernel you're using, hardware
characteristics. Check memory and disks. Try a few kernel compiles
(stresses CPU).

Try running the system in various configurations with modules disabled
and/or with hardware (cards) removed.

How often is the system rebooting?

RE: monitor display is getting blurry...what could be the problem?

2001-05-22 Thread Rick Commo
is the video card that is sending faulty signals? or
is it the monitor. The monitor is a Mag MXP17F about 6 years old.
Any thoughts? Is there someway I can definitely confirm that the
monitor is faulty or the videocard. Can I focus the monitor?

It's most likely the monitor. That has components that wear electrically.
That is to say, components subjected to heat and aging. For example, the
cathode of the CRT could be losing emission. One thing is did you change
monitor cables for any reason recently? Perhaps a longer one? The
sharpness of pixels is related to the signal loss in the video cable, which
goes up with length. This increases (slows) the risetime of the video
pulses and causes pixel smearing. And these are only two of the possible
causes!

The best way would be to borrow one of the monitors from work for a night
and check it against your video card. Conversely you could bring your
monitor into work.

newbie DHCP TCP questions

2001-05-22 Thread Scott Frankel

I'm setting up a dual-boot Debian Linux | MacOS PowerBook. It's connected
to a LinkSys Cable/DSL Router, supporting DHCP. After configuring the router,
the MacOS side works flawlessly. But there's no joy yet on the linux side.

One thing that'd sure help would be to know how I can translate terms my ISP
uses into the terms-fields used in /etc/network/interfaces. i.e.:
  [...]
  network -- ?
  broadcast -- router address?
  gateway -- name server addresses?

Would anyone have example /etc/network/interfaces syntax for configuring the
automagic of DHCP? Under MacOS, all the TCP/IP settings are supplied by the
router. How is that set up here? Is there another script or file used to
configure DHCP?

Once I get the DSL connection working under Debian Linux, my next task is
to find a package, XF86Config(?), so I can get my PowerBook's trackpad to work
under X. Then maybe I can boot into one of Linux's graphical UI's ;)

Thanks

pppoe on a new install?

2001-05-22 Thread kyle
Has anyone had any success setting up Debian on a system that connects to the
net using DSL via PPPoE? The .deb packages appear to be missing the
configuration scripts and documentation. The Roaring Penguin site only has
information on the latest version, version 3.0, which depends on libc6 2.2.2 or
greater (and is currently part of Woody). This, of course, has a lengthy
dependency chain, breaking Potato completely. Unfortunately, I can't upgrade
to Woody, because I can't connect to the net with Debian yet. Finally,
downloading Woody under Win98 doesn't work, because
c:\dists\woody\main\binary-i386\Release gets read as
dists/woody/main/binary~1/Release

Oy. So I'm having trouble. There must be some simple solution I'm missing,
anybody know what it is? Thanks!

My server is always down in about every week. I haven't found what is
the cause of the system shutdown. I suspect that the error is generated
by Netfilter; I don't know for sure, though. Some of the content (the
last part) of /var/log/ksymoops/*.ksysms is in the following:

c01afa40 register_qdisc
c01afac4 unregister_qdisc

c01e3ec0 rwsem_down_read_failed
c01e3fd8 rwsem_down_write_failed
c01e40f8 rwsem_wake

The failure it seems, is on rwsem. What is that? In the middle of the
log, it has panic too.

When iptables is started, I always have this:
CBQ: class 0001024e has bad quantum==0, repaired.
CBQ: class 0001024e has bad quantum==0, repaired.
CBQ: class 0001024f has bad quantum==0, repaired.
Might this be the cause of the system error? It says: repaired. So I
think that there should be no problem. But thing is, the crashes are
periodical. There is another machine in my workplace that have about the
same load with this one, but it recently it stayed up until 44 days
without problem (the only thing that made it had to be rebooted was that
I sent out 250 messages using mail -- done via a Perl loop -- which
caused the system to ran out of memory).

BTW, I use stable Debian on kernel 2.4.4 and Netfilter (iptables) 1.1.2.

I'd like to use the newer Iptables, but on stable Debian, I have to use
1.1.2; well, I don't have to, but installing the newer version of
Iptables need something more than apt-get install iptables. Please
help.

TIA,
Oki

 1) Does Debian come with any drivers for my computer?

depends on the computer and what kind of hardware it runs

 2) Do I have the drivers on the Debian install disk?

some of them are, some of them are not..depends on the hardware

 3) From whom or where do I request the drivers?

search the www for them, many are built into the system, but some
are not(those that are not can be difficult to install)

 4) Is there documentation on how to request or install the drivers?

nothing specific it varies from driver to driver, there are dozens of
sources for drivers each typically each one has its own way to install
them. very driver dependant

 5) At what point or location do I get to install the drivers to make
Debian able to locate my computer's hard drives and use my specific
 motherboard?

if it cannot locate the hard disk it would help if you told us exactly
what kind of disk controller you have and what kind of drives(ide/scsi/etc)

 Statements:
 1) I will gladly pay for this information!

don't need to :) just be patient.

 2) I do not have internet access beyond getting a non-Debian-using
neighbor to type my hand-written request for me, as I don't type.

i would probably honestly reccomend against using linux then,
linux's biggest strengths in my view are it's networking and
internet based support. unless your computer is made up of
the most basic components internet access will be required
before/during and after installation and configuration.

 3) He is my only access, and his Mac G4 does not have floppy drives,
nor does it have a CD burner, etc.

not good ..

 4) This is my first computer.

unless you know someone local that can help, i wouldn't go with
debian then. if you want linux probably its good to start with
mandrake or something. its not as good as debian at the core
but you can get used to what the system feels like and when
you do get net access you can move on to the more powerful
stuff. ive trained and assisted many many people(in person)
with debian and with linux/unix in general, it takes a lot
of time and patience and internet access of course!

 5) I built my computer from OEM parts, and taught myself to load five
 versions of Microsoft operating systems.

thats a good start.

 6) They crashed a lot.

hopefully the cause of the crashes was software and not hardware
related.

Because I have no other means, I would like to obtain loadable hard
 copies of the drivers.

by the very nature of the linux kernel this is not likely to happen
unless the distribution you choose has such drivers ready on the installer
cd. unless your hardware is very generic in which case there will
be no trouble.

 1) Supermicro P6 DGU 440GX 82443 GX-family chipset motherboard using
upgraded flash BIOS R03.0 DGU 4061 ROM. The original BIOS was
super.ROM. (Has built-in SCSI RAID support).

nice mainboard..should work well.

 2) My CPU is an Intel Pentium III running at 450Mhz.

well supported cpu

 3) I am attempting to load Debian version 2.2 with GNOME 1.2.1, and
 the Opera web browser.

not sure about opera it may require anew ver of glibc but im not
sure ...been a while since i used it.

 4) I have a 3Com USR 56K Voice/Faxmodem.

external(hopefully)? or internal? if internal exactly what is the
model# ? must be specific, and/or what is the FCC ID.

 5) One Toshiba SCSI2UW 40X CD-ROM.

nice drive. should work fine.

 6) One SoundBlaster LIVE! sound card

should work fine too, although i don't know if debian supports
it out of the box.

 7) One 3DLabs Oxygen GVX 210 Dualhead Video card.

this i have no idea about don't know what kind of
chip this is. may or may not work ..check www.xfree86.org/3.3.6/

 8) One Viewsonic VPA150 Flat monitor.

should work fine ..

 9) One Logitech Trackman Marble FX trackball.

should work fine
 10) Three IBM 9.1GB SCSI2UW HDs.
 11) One generic 3.5 floppy drive.

should work fine ..

I will be building a stripe set across the three HDs. I am teaching
myself these tasks. Without drivers that come on some form of disk
that I can use, I can't continue. So far, people have asked various
questions or said to ask the Debian developers and users. But noone
has replied to my request for the drivers.

for the basic stuff it should just work. i have a similar 440GX
board next to me with dual P2-450s and 1GB of ram, and debian
2.2 detected everything out of the box. very generic hardware
as far as debian is concerned. as for the stripe set ...that
is not as easy under debian, i wouldn't be concered with it
right away..learn the system before doing advanced stuff like
raid.

How can I find a hard copy of the drivers? Anticipating that I will
need various drivers, I included the above list. If I need to supply
serial numbers or ven numbers I will be happy to do so.

with the exception of the video card everything should work good.

It doesn't work either, I use the -i option because it the one that reports a

OK, in that case you might want to try having a look at the file using
an editor.
Tar files are not compressed, but simply archives of files (tar is short
for
Tape ARchive) so when you look at a tar file you have a 512byte header,
then the
contents of the first file, another 512byte header, the contents of the
second
file etc. etc.

Since the first part of the tar file seems ok you should be able to
identify the
structure and from this you might be able to identify the problem
further on in
the file.

Let me know if you need further info.

Re: small school: replacements for MS Word and Excel

2001-05-22 Thread John Foster
If you are going to have to foot the financial burden for even a small
network using Microsoft products (you said 12) the cost is rather
prohibitive if you are depending on local budgets. I suspect that is the
reason for seeking a replacement rather than evangelizing Linux. It is
just for this reason that virtually ALL of the Mexican public school
systems networks are being converted to Linux. This is an ongoing, well
publicized project. I agree that there are not likely to be easy to
manage (idiot proof) solutions, but they definitely are worthy of trial.
I do think that there are tools that will do what you want, but not in a
related suite other than StarOffice 5.2. and if properly installed I
believe it offers at least the same functionality as MS Office. Lyx is
an excellent word processor/actually a publishing tool and has
capabilities far beyond MS Word. I do NOT think NTFS offers ANY
advantage over ext2 as far as functionality and definitely not in
performance. And if there is real concern then reiserfs is available
though a bit more difficult to install. In most cases there is likely to
be a network advisor or sysadmin person who will handle all of these
problems. The 2 real advantages here are cost savings and the very real
advantage of this list as a source of help and encouragement. Try to get
either from Microsoft.

PostgreSQL 7.1 PHP4

2001-05-22 Thread Nicolas Kowalski

Hello.

I have a small Intranet server running Debian potato 2.2_rev3 on
x86. This machine also runs PostgreSQL 7.0.3 and Apache/PHP4.

I would like to upgrade the PostgreSQL installation to 7.1.1. I
followed the instructions from Oliver's page, updates my sources.list,
did an `apt-get update' then `apt-get -s dist-upgrade'. Unfortunately,
apt showed me that the 'php4-pgsql' package could be removed with this
upgrade. As this is essential for our Intranet, I cancelled the whole
upgrade.

Has anyone an idea/solution ? Do I have to recompile all theses
packages by hand (postgresql, php4, ...) ?

Thanks.

Nicolas.

get php4-pgsql sources from debian-non-us and compile them yourself. this
works fine. if you need it i can sent you php 4.05 compiled for potato with
postgresql 7.

  root=/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/part5

 One thing is missing:
disk=/dev/hdb bios=0x80 # Tell LILO to treat the second

# disk (BIOS ID 0x80).
and one other should be different:

 root=/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part5

(note the bus0 - because that's where your system wants to get / from
when booted from that (now bus1) drive!

Yes, but I want to leave my hard disk in the bus1 location and still
boot from it. My bios can do this.

You were correct above with disk=/dev/hdb bios=0x80.

There was one additional thing which I couldn't figure out for ages. I
also needed this
linear (I did have lba32 instead). When I put lba32 it doesn't work.
When I put linear it does work. Strange, because on the first HD
/etc/lilo.conf I have it the other way around. Very Confusing!

So here is what I have in /etc/lilo.conf for the second HD - which works!
-
linear
disk=/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/disc
bios=0x80
boot=/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/disc
root=/dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/part5
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
delay=20
vga=normal
default=Linux
image=/vmlinuz
label=Linux
read-only

image=/vmlinuz.old
label=LinuxOLD
read-only
optional
-

I still don't understand a few things though. Why do I need linear?
Why do I need bios=0x80 when it is really 0x82 (I think)?

Thanks again for helping me out. It finally works :-)

Hi!

But be careful by upgrading the required packages. And you could need to

Yes, well one source for linux* newsgroups being deprecated can be found
through the LDP docs, that's where I last read it a couple of years ago.
Look under a ~'where to get further help with Linux' resource link.

One thing that I'm not sure still happens is that whomever is running
this mail news gateway honors, or is stripping (inadvertently perhaps)
'X-No-Archive: yes' from the list postings if the author is placing them
there, as I do. I don't mind Debian or any other ML I'm subscribed to
maintaining a Web archive. However, I mention it only as I get the
feeling (I'll check later in l.d.u. to see definitively) from finding
some of my posts to this list appearing in groups.google.com that the
header is being removed along the way.

If they're using mail2news (from newsgate), that strips all headers it
doesn't know about, including all X- headers. It's very annoying
behaviour.

BTW, who is doing the gateway'ing? If need be, I'd like to contact them
directly, other than looking at bang paths for a clue to their identity.

I believe it's done by Marco d'Itri (the Debian inn maintainer). There
was a discussion about it a couple of months ago either here or on
debian-devel, so you could search the archives; try looking for a post

Installing 3c990 kernel module

2001-05-22 Thread Rus
Hi,

I am trying to install 3Com's 3c990 kernel module for 2.2.x kernels.
Compiling the module seems fine, and ive run insmod and got the following
output :

gothic:/home/idimmu# insmod 3c990.o
3Com 3c990.c v1.0.0b 10/2000
The PCI BIOS has not enabled the device at 0/64. Updating PCI command
0007-|
(PCI_COMMAND_MASTER | PCI_COMMAND_INVALIDATE).

I don't know what to do next though. Do I have to alter /etc/modules or
something? And is it possible to check if it all works without continously
rebooting?

Thanks very much.

Rus

People are so afraid of the all mighty install. I guess that is why
you suggest Mandrake. Why don't you at least keep it in the family and
suggest Progeny?

Once you install it really isn't much to apt-get kde or whatever
Mandrake has that is suppose to make things easier for a newbie.

I started with Debian when the installation routine was much harder than
it is now. It was my second operating system after using Windows for 6
months to a year.
