-name '*\.*'` ; do mv $i $(echo $i | sed -e \ 's/^..//;s/\./_/g') ; done cd .. mailutil transfer -v -m append 'INBOX/*' '{smtp/user=tom}' Il a fallu quand-même quelques essais pour comprendre et passer ces étapes.
Intenté googlear un poco y todavía no he encontrado nada. Servidor Debian Linux Virtualizando Unix o nativo Unix?
/Fredrik -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
Re: rsync backup to ext3-formatted usb flash drive?
On Aug 10, 2008, at 2:12 AM, Brian Wells wrote: Hi. I'm using svn-fast-backup (in the subversion-tools package) to make rsync backups of my subversion repository. The place I'm backing up to is on an ext3-formatted usb flash drive, and I'm wondering if this is a wise thing to do. I know that flash drive blocks wear out after a certain number of writes, and rsync uses hard links to avoid duplicate backup files. My question is, does this mean that the inodes' reference counts will be changed frequently enough that it might wear out that block of the flash drive any time soon? (I currently backup about 900 files one or two times a day.) If so, is ext3 capable of using another block for the inode, or will I lose the ability to read/write some files completely? Thanks, Brian Here are some basic facts about USB flash drives: The underlying NAND flash RAM is guaranteed for 100K writes (older technology) or 1M (more recent). After that it's retention time starts to decrease, sometimes to as little as a few weeks, and with continued use eventually to complete failure. The retention time of a new, fully-functional NAND flash RAM is hundreds of years. USB flash drives have controller chips in the drive that, among other things, talk USB protocol to the host. One of the other things they do is try to distribute the writes over the available blocks, extending the lifetime of the device beyond the raw lifetime of the underlying NAND flash. But the firmware in the controller usually assumes you are using a FAT file-system. If, for example, you use EXT3 rather than FAT, you will probably confuse it. I don't know what the effect will be on device life, but I'm guessing it will probably be something like a return to the behavior of the raw NAND flash. Write blocks are large (4-8K or more). If you update one inode in a block, you have to read the entire block, update the inode and write the entire block back again. Each write to an inode causes an effective write to all the inodes in the same block. So there's roughly a 64x multiplier (8Kbytes/block divided by 128bytes/inode = 64 inodes/block) in the number of writes. Thus any given single inode is good for roughly 16K updates before it wears out. Let's suppose your rsync backup causes a small number of updates for each inode it touches. Call it 10, conservatively (it very well could be as low as 1 or 2 -- I don't know enough of the details of how rsync works at the filesystem level). That gives you about 1600 rsync runs before you start to wear out the inodes. At twice a day, you can safely use your USB flash drive for 800 days, or between 2 and 3 years. So here's what I'd do. Use your USB flash drive for a year, then retire it to the long-term archives and replace it with a new one. Let that be one of those things you do on or near your birthday, like schedule a checkup with your Doctor. Also: dismount the flash drive, force an fsck, and remount it, every time you do a backup. This will read and sanity-check every inode on the drive, without doing any writes. If the fsck shows random errors, replace the drive because it's probably starting to wear out. Sound reasonable? These are the packages for the different components; if you only want the browser then you need iceape-browser. I thought there were only Debian Stable, Testing and Unstable; but now I see also `experimental'. What's that? Sid normally has the newest released versions of software, or at least reasonably usable release-candidate versions. A package in experimental can be anything from a very usable development snapshot (with new features) to something that is completely useless if you are not a developer working on that program/driver. During (or even before) a pre-release freeze, experimental can furthermore act as the repository for new versions of packages that cannot go into unstable because a previous version is meant to be released with the next stable. Examples for this are the KDE 4.* packages: The 4.0 versions were really experimental but the 4.1 ones seem to be quite OK and could in principle enter Sid. However, they have to be kept out of Sid until after the release of Lenny (except for certain KDE/Qt 4.* development tools and libraries), so they stay in experimental. -- Regards,| http://users.icfo.es/Florian.Kulzer Florian | -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. State of 64bit desktop
Hi guys, At work I'm starting to push the limits of my RAM with MySQL/InnoDB on my workstation (I do dev/testing on my workstation). I have 64bit hardware, capable of taking 8gb memory. What I'm worried about is the tools I use. In particular, I need a browser with all the usual suspects working properly: flash and java (unfortunately some of the tools I need to use at work are written in these abominable languages). Does anyone do heavy java and flash usage under 64bit Debian (I'm running Lenny)? One tool in particular I'm forced to use is the Raritan KVM interface. It's horrible. Is this move viable or should I rather invest in a second box (won't come for free). I don't want to mess around with 32bit chroots - did that before and I didn't like it one bit. RE: USB to IDE Interfaces
From: Martin McCormick [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: USB to IDE Interfaces I want to be able to connect various IDE drives to a Linux system via USB port for backups, restores, and diagnostics such as: Is this drive good for anything other than a paper weight? I'd hate to buy an interface and find out I need some special driver that only exists under Windows. I have used dedicated USB devices that had IDE drives in them and they worked fine all be it slo-o-owly on a USB2 port, but this would be different because each IDE drive is going to be formatted differently and be anywhere from gigabytes to 40 megabytes in capacity. If I understand things right, the IDE drive itself registers its parameters so this may not be an issue and the device should respond to mount, dd, and fdisk like any other device. I am hoping to upgrade the IDE drives on some older Linux systems from 10 GB to larger and use the USB to IDE converter to assist in transfering files and using the still functional smaller drives as archival storage. Any ideas and recommendations as to which interfaces are good or which should be avoided are appreciated. Thank you. Granted, I don't really push the limits of it; it is just there when I do have a drive I need to look at the contents and I don't want to reboot the system. It gets light usage. I only really have 2 complaints about it. 1) When you plug it into a Debian Lenny (haven't really tested it on much else) it displays just like my USB thumbdrives do. Every once in a while though, when you unmount and disconnect the device, HAL freaks out. Then other USB thumbdrives and things no longer automount. HAL has to be reset. I haven't looked in a couple of months, but I did find a bug report back when I did look. I don't think I have seen this problem in the last couple of weeks, but I haven't really used it much recently either. 2) I can't find any of the USB devices that will work with SmartMonTools or anything else that tries to connect to the hard drive itself. In order to do that you need one that has the cypress chipset. There are some out there supposedly, but I haven't ever found one for purchase... For more details see here: http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/faq.html#testinghelp To answer your questions directly, the Newegg link will work at least in the current Debian Lenny for backup and restores without any special drivers. You may find that your diagnostics don't work. I don't have an answer for you on that as I have not been able to find one myself. The only group of devices I recommend you stay far away from are the ones that supply power /only/ via USB. I have tried 2 of them and they both had 2 USB plugs, one for power and one for data. They seemed to work perfectly on the laptop drives, but neither of them seemed to function when connected to a standard IDE. I did not test SATA on those. The others I have tried, including the one linked above, have separate power for the drives. Good Luck! Have Fun! ~S~ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. RE: State of 64bit desktop
From: kj [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: State of 64bit desktop Hi guys, At work I'm starting to push the limits of my RAM with MySQL/InnoDB on my workstation (I do dev/testing on my workstation). Thanks --kj Fraid that this might be a mileage may vary type of question... Here is my 2 cents though. I had horrible problems with Debian Etch and 64bit. 64bit Debian Lenny has been /brilliant/ but I have only worked with server class testing/development; I have not had a chance to test Lenny on a Desktop 64bit system. One guy I know does use a 64bit Desktop with Java/flash but that is with Ubuntu Hardy so I don't know how great the difference will be for you. My personal suggestion, if you can do it, would be to give it a shot and then report what you find back to the Debian Dev team before Lenny goes stable. It would probably help them out quite a bit and help generate more interest in the 64bit world. Of course not everyone has the time/ability to do that* and if you are one of those people then my suggestion would be to wait till Lenny is released and ask again. At the very least, I should be able to respond**. Have fun! ~S~ *Unfortunately, I have to raise my hand here...for now at least. I keep hoping for some spare time. :-( **We have an upgrade path planned to move a bunch of production systems to 64bit once Lenny goes stable. As we do that I have a development desktop system that is 64bit capable (currently running 32bit Debian) that I can at least tell you how it works out for me. Just give me a couple weeks for migration. :-D -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]

No problem with flashplugin-nonfree here in amd64 etch except flash except nspluginwrapper takes a whole lot more cpu than I would like it to.
